Bead Board in the Kitchen

Deb and Danelle - The Woods and Ivy CottageDeb and Danelle - The Woods and Ivy Cottage

Well… the cottage projects are well underway.  Deb made the comment a few days back that she is afraid we will run out of projects soon.  ????  She has no clue what is going around in my head.  There’s a lot. So far, we have gotten the floor installed, hung some faux brick paneling around the fireplace, gave the antique fireplace mantel a makeover, and most recently, we hung bead board in the kitchen.  I knew I wanted some type of accent wall but didn’t know what I wanted until we took a trip to Menards.  We looked at several options including wallpaper, bead board paneling,  and shiplap but we found bead board planks and wanted to try them out.  We hung the paneling in our tiny house before but have never worked with the planks.  Keep scrolling to see how we achieved our bead board plank DIY.

Bead Board in the Kitchen

They come seven to a pack and they are 8′ long.  We found them SO SIMPLE to install. They are tongue and groove and once you get the hang of it all, it goes pretty fast, too.  You can install these vertically or horizontally.  We chose vertical.  And we used an air nailer to hang them.   Obviously we didn’t worry about installing them all the way to the floor because the kitchen cabinets will be hiding that part.

I ended up priming the bead board wall with oil based paint because of the knot holes.  We have found that if you don’t prime them, they will show through.  I then painted the entire wall with plain white paint right off the shelf – no mixing.  It is in a Satin sheen and looks really pretty.

One of the reasons I love these bead board planks is because they look authentic.  You can see they aren’t perfect and give the illusion of an older wall.  Which if you’ve been around for any length of time, you know that is our goal.  All of our structures here in the woods will be made to look like they have been here forever.

Upcoming Projects

  • We have an entire bathroom to do.  We found some lath boards that were all pretty straight so we want to hang them horizontally as an accent wall in the bathroom.  That will be happening some time this week / weekend
  • The garage here in the cottage will be painted TODAY and then we worked with a company on some organizational pieces.  I am so excited to get that area done.  Deb will be thrilled, too.
  • I have big plans for an accent wall in the bedroom and of course, to paint the bedroom closet doors.  I am still unsure if I will paint them solid or sand them to make them look old.  We will see
  • Fancy trim will be added around the window.  You can see Deb trimmed out the kitchen window here but I will share all the details on a post soon.
  • And, of course, we have the fireplace insert which will be revealed in the next couple of days, too.  Make sure you follow on social media to get the first look at things.

What do you think about the bead board accent wall in the kitchen.  I love how it turned out.
