I used to be a BIG crafter. I still like to do a handful of little craft projects each season just to spice things up a bit around here. I’ve shared before that I used to set up a booth at craft shows back in the 90s. And… my friends and I had a craft day about once a month. We each took turns picking out different fun things to make. And call each other on our land lines to report what we had found in magazines, etc. ???? Those were the days.
We made the little folk art Santas that I shared before. We had so much fun on craft days. Our kids would all play together and have so much fun. And, then I started making my little vintage looking feather trees and sold them in our local Rustic Hutch. I have several little fun crafts in the DIY tab up top. And you can always look in the seasonal section to get more ideas for decor in your own home. A few weeks I made some no-bake gingerbread men that were really fun! I have a few more ideas so keep your eyes peeled.
But today, I wanted to share a simple salt-dough star garland. We happened to make these back in the 90s also, so this brought back some memories. Keep scrolling to see how to make this simple DIY Christmas garland.
Basically you mix all of the dry ingredients above together in a bowl… including the spices.
Add the essential oil to the water.
Add about half of the water to the dry ingredients and stir. Slowly add more and stir, until it gets the consistency of cookie dough
I have tried lots of different salt dough recipes and this is the best I have found.
Roll out to about 1/8″ thick, just as you would cut-out cookies. I used stars because, I wanted to make a star garland. You know how I feel about garlands. But obviously you can use whatever shape you want.
After I cut out all of my stars, I poked a hole in the middle with a skewer. And then I baked them in a 170 degree oven for one hour. I flipped them over and baked them for another hour. I then strung them on a long piece of cotton string, tying a knot on each side of the star so that they don’t move.
After my garland was done, I realized I had several more stars. So I decided to tie strings in them singly to make Christmas ornaments. Several people said that they have the same salt dough ornaments from years ago and they have lasted. I intend to keep these for next year.
I really love how they turned out and think it was a fun little project.
