I have been sharing in a new series here on my site all of the stories behind our pieces. I usually share one, possibly two, posts a week. We have so many great pieces that we have had forever, and some newer pieces. They all have such great stories. Therefore, this series began. You can find all of the posts in that series here. It has been fun reminiscing and thinking about where we bought a certain piece, how much it cost, any repairs we needed to do, etc. I couldn’t wait to share this white cabinet with you because it has a LONG history with me.
This is the story behind our large white cabinet.
This large white cabinet is a BEAST. I’m talking probably one of the heaviest cabinets we have. I believe it may be made out of walnut, because the wood is very dark underneath the paint. The two top doors are in storage. Anyway, I have had this cabinet since my mid 20s. I believe my parents bought this at an auction for basically nothing. For some reason, $10 sticks in my mind. They had no room for it because of it’s massive size. I believe it is 6′ across and 7′ tall. So it takes a special home for it to fit in.
I had a huge wall in the master bedroom of my very first home. It took 4 men to carry this cabinet in the house and place it where I wanted it. It was great storage for my extra home decor and I even stored some of my sweaters in this beast.
After my divorce, I moved from that home to a smaller home. There was one wall that my huge white cabinet would fit. It again took four guys to carry this white cabinet into my home. I lived with it for awhile and mentioned to Deb that I wanted that piece gone… not sold… just gone. Maybe storage???? I wanted a different look in that room.
A few weeks later, one of my friends called and said that they weren’t going to install kitchen cabinets in their new build right away and said, “If you ever want me to store that huge white cabinet for you, I would love to use it as my kitchen cabinet for awhile.” (This is how our lives work.) She lined up the men to come and take that cabinet and she used it for YEARS.
Deb and I briefly owned a storefront. I mentioned to Deb while we were setting up that store that I want to give our friend notice that I will be wanting that big white cabinet back to hold a paint display in our store. I made the phone call and she said, ‘I was going to call you this week. Our cabinets are being delivered.”
We used the cabinet in our storefront as a paint display … along with home decor, etc. We decided to sell our storefront but had no place for that huge cabinet. When we got the offer, the new owners said, “If you want to leave that cabinet here, we could use it for a display. Just let us know when you want it back.”
A few years later, I mentioned to Deb that I would love that cabinet back. But didn’t want to create any issues as far as storage for the new owners of the store. I text the owner and said that we were interested in it, and once she finds a replacement, we will make plans to come and get it. She said, “I was just about to call you. We sold the store and I can have my hubs and a few others drop it off to you.”
This white cabinet actually fit in our tiny rental home we lived in before the cottage. And it fits perfectly here in the cottage holding my yellow ware bowl collections.
Do you believe it? ???? This cabinet has kept lots of people happy for so many years. I had thought about actually selling it for awhile, but after this history, I think it wants to stay with us. ????

Love the story!!! If furniture could talk! Having a piece of furniture that has meant so much to so many - kind of what I would call a "meant to be" kind of thing. Thank you for sharing.
Love all your old cabinets!!! And the stories behind them make them even better!!
I love it, I love hearing the history of your pieces, mine have history also, I have a Stepback, that is so heavy, it’s not been moved since I bought it, over 24 years ago, it holds my collection of Blue Onion Dishes, there’s a lot of them. .Then my Drysink Cupboard, holds my collection of Happy Holidays... . What makes your pieces look so pretty, is being up against white, mine just get lost up against log walls, it’s hard to get color in there , that’s why I love watching y’all’s stories, y’all do it so well... thank you.
I truly believe things happen for a reason. Seems that cabinet was saying, “Take what you need from me” before moving in to the next person who needed it. ❤️
This is such a cool story - and for sure my favorite so far! I think even if you tried to sell that cabinet it would make its way back to you. It’s meant to be yours!
That is a great story! It's so funny how these things work out. I think this piece has to stay with you, but maybe someone else will need it for awhile if you feel yourself itching to get rid of it again. Thanks for sharing :)
Oh never sell it! It must stay with you forever!
Wonderful story!
I loved reading this story about the big white cupboard!! ❤️
Love the story behind this big white cabinet. It has a history. Kind of like old houses. My husband and are restoring an old two story 1929 house. We love history and have looked into the history of our place. My husband helped out a family that had ties to the house. They had a painting of the farm and thought it should stay with the house. We have yet to find a good place to hang it once we are done with the renovations.
