I shared the door that we found for our guest coat closet door several months back.  It needed a bit of work and the original stain was bubbled.  So, I removed that soon after we got it.  As you know, the crew was there hanging all the trim in our home a few weeks back. And they got that door hung.  Well, I finished it (almost) this past weekend so I wanted to give you the update on our guest coat closet door.  I added something fun and love how it turned out.

Update on our Guest Coat Closet Door

I loved the raw wood look of this door, but I decided to stain it. I used a Minwax stain in the color Special Walnut.  It worked really well to bring out the details of the wood and gave it a really pretty warm brown color.

The door was originally a regular size door, so in order for it to fit the entryway, we needed to cut it down.  It was several inches too tall and several inches too wide.  As you can see, when Deb cut down the door, it left the sides pretty skinny.  One of the most asked questions about this door was how would we add a doorknob to this coat closet door.  

We had the crew add a ball latch to the top of the door to keep it closed.  And then I found this rusty looking handle to add to the door and it works perfectly.  Those handles come in several different sizes so I chose the 5″ one as I wanted it to be a little more substantial.  I think it matches really well with the style of the door.

Extra Details….

If you have been around her for any length of time, you probably already know we are a little extra.  We love to pay attention to the small details in our home as it adds so much.  It makes it special and unique to us.  So… I added an extra little detail to this coat closet door to make it stand out even more.

I have looked for an old COATS sign for months.  Because I wanted an antique one.  But, once I realized how difficult they are to find, I decided to grab one that I found on Etsy.  It is a metal sign that was made to look old, but it didn’t feel like us yet.  So I gave that a little makeover and think it works a little better.  I will be sharing about that soon.

Rather than using screws, we decided to attach this COATS sign with old square nails.  I think it gives the coat closet door another detail that makes it look older.  I am pretty happy with how this door turned out.

What’s Left on the Guest Coat Closet in the Entryway

As you can see, there is one piece of glass that was missing.  So that needs to be replaced.  I’m not sure what we are going to do to the glass… as in getting textured glass, etch it, or use frosted glass spray.  But, I believe I want something to disguise the coats that will be in there when we have company, but I don’t know yet.

Also.. this closet is really big.  We, of course, will hang up a coat rack, but I also have this idea to make it a little play house for the grandkids.  I think that would be the cutest ever.  Since I have so many ideas for that, it will probably happen.  Because I can’t get it out of my head.  So stay tuned for that, as well.
