I’m so excited to share this project. I found today’s piece on an online garage sale site and knew EXACTLY what I wanted to use it for. I need to back up though. When I was designing our kitchen, I knew I wanted only lower cabinets and thought I wanted open shelving. Yes, cabinet boy looked at me all crazy-like when I only ordered lower ones.
But since we cook every meal at home, I was afraid open shelving wasn’t going to be practical for us. I mean… where would we put our spices so they were close at hand? Where would we store our oils and vinegars that we regularly cook with? They had to be somewhere near the stove for convenience. I already had our lower cabinets ordered so changing one of those drawers into a spice drawer was out of the question. I decided to keep my eyes peeled for small, mismatched, antique wall cabinets to hang on each side of the stove. I’ve always loved that look.
I carried my measurements with me everywhere I went. I happened to pull up a Facebook garage sale site and saw the upper part of a grandfather clock that was the EXACT measurements that I needed. It was missing the original door, but the rounded top was what I was drawn to. Never mind the fact that a rat had chewed part of the top off inside… ???? I could look past that. ????
The guy told me that it was his great grandpa’s grandfather clock and had sat in his barn forever. (Queue the rat) The guy took it from the barn and always wanted to do something with it but never did. So it sat in his attic for over 20 years. He was asking $5.00 for it. So it was definitely in my budget. ???? And as far as missing its door…. I mean, hello, I have a Deb! She sees things like this as a challenge.
One day she disappeared in her shop and came back with a little door for my cabinet. She made it out of antique bead board that my dad was throwing away. The door ended up warping a bit but that bothers me as much as the rat chewing. I really love the story of this piece, the fact that Deb made the door for it, and the fact it was $5.00.
Thanks so much for stopping by! I pledge my love from deep down inside my heart! ????
Buh bye now, said in an old lady’s voice who is shocked she actually has a rat chewed upper kitchen cabinet. ????
