How do you create a home that is cohesive?  Where do you start when making the switch to a neutral color palette?  How do I get that calming feeling in my home?  Those are a few questions that I receive on the regular.  I usually gravitate toward neutral colors:  brown tones – including different tones of wood, golds, whites and creams, and sometimes a little green here and there.  It creates a very calm environment for us to live in.  I’ve said it before several times, but when I have too much color in our home, or even darker colors, my brain can’t relax. So colors affect me tremendously.  I thought I would share a few tips on how to create a neutral color palette in your home which also gives you the calming feeling.

Creating a Neutral Color Palette in your Home

Sometimes, we overthink things and make things a little more complicated than we need to be.  So, I am here to help break it all down for you today.  Creating a neutral color palette in your home is easier than you think.  If you have an entire home full of color and you are leaning towards the woods and whites, I have a few tips for you as well.

Start with a neutral paint color in each room.

We have all of our rooms painted white. I realized it isn’t practical for you to go all out and paint every single room at once.  So start by focusing on one room only.   I know painting your rooms white sounds quite boring to some people.  But as you start adding your other neutral colors, you will see the madness behind the theory.  Ha!  And, if you aren’t a fond lover of plain white walls, paint them a nice cream or beige color.

After you have your neutral color palette on the walls, you can start adding things here and there within each room.  The following are a few examples of where to start.

Layer different shades of neutrals with your blankets and bedding.

I love to layer things within my decor.  Actually, the more layers the better.  That includes blankets on our beds and blankets and throws we use on the couch.  Picking neutral-toned blankets and quilts really gives you that calming palette that we are going for.  As well as adding lots of texture which makes it more interesting.  This Company Cotton Quilt by the Company Store is perfect for layering at the end of your bed.  Or using it as a couch cover, too.  We have this quilt in the mushroom color.  But there are several to choose from to get the same look:  Buff, Cedar, and White.

Designer Tip

If you have a bright colored couch, use a king size blanket to cover it up.  I have done that a lot in the past.  Tuck it down between the cushions and it will stay fairly well… And, it’s washable.

Choose neutral colors in your everyday kitchen items.

Because I love to use my every day items within my kitchen decor, I tend to gravitate toward white or beige dishes.  They not only look pretty, but if you have a sink full of beige or white dishes, they don’t scream.. “LOOK.. I haven’t done my dishes.”  They will blend in with everything else.  Ha!  At least that’s how I think.  This is a set by Home Decorators Collection at The Home Depot.  They are melamine which means they are perfect for outdoor dining and for the grandkids.  Because they are unbreakable when dropped.  This set of dishes come in this natural beige color and charcoal black.  Black is also a neutral color that I like to add to my home.. but it has to be just a splash here and there, like the dishes.

Use neutral colored storage baskets in your spaces.

We have a ton of baskets because they are useful for just about everything.  We use them for not only storing items in the pantry and closets, but I love them for holding our cozy blankets we use on the couch.  It keeps the room a bit more tidy.  You can get them in all colors of browns and all shades of whites.  And, they add a lot of texture to your spaces. These round ivory hyacinth baskets by Stylewell are gorgeous.  They come in this set of two so you get two different sizes.  Think about them for your outdoor spaces as well.. to hold plants.  And, speaking of plants…..

Add a pop of green to your rooms to give them life.

Green is still a neutral color in my book.  I love adding plants and greenery to every single room. Not only for the pop of neutral color, but it gives the room life.  I particularly love topiaries and have collected several throughout the years.  They must be artificial though.. because real ones last 3 weeks in this house.  These 23″ artificial boxwood topiaries look great on our porches.  We get so busy in the summer with yard work and gardening that the last thing I want to do is water a million things.  So these will be perfect.  This 15″ boxwood topiary is another great option for smaller spaces.  And, I absolutely love these 21″ artificial double boxwood topiaries on our table.  These would also look really good in the bathroom, kitchen, etc. 

Makeover items that you already have.

I am the queen of keeping things for years.  Have you seen our home decor room?  Ha!  There are all kinds of treasures down there.  If you have something that you love, give it a quick makeover with a coat of neutral paint.  Again, I typically use whites, creams, golds, browns, and greens.  You would be surprised how much different a piece can look with a fresh coat of paint.  Don’t forget about spray paint either.  Talk about a quick makeover.
