Remember when we did our first bigger project in the woods?  That project happened to be our fire pit.  We used products we already had laying around in the woods.  And got some pea gravel from the local stone quarry to finish it.  Well, we loved and used that fire pit so many times, but when we built the house, that had to be demolished.  The garage is almost on top of that very spot.  We recently hired a landscaper to add some plants and shrubs around our home. We were so happy with his work that we hired him for a bigger job.  I am happy to say that our fire pit is done.

Story Time – Sunday Fun Day

We have missed not having a fire pit.  The electricians started working at the end of March, 2022 on a few things around our old fire pit.  We can’t hang outside during the winter months here in Ohio due to the weather.  Therefore, the last campfire that we had was in the fall of 2021.  We are going on 2 years without a place to build a fire here in the woods.  It’s not that big of a deal considering all things going on in the world.  But, it’s something we love to do.

Deb and I lived in town for years.  I think it was around 2010, we bought a big house out in the country with an absolutely gorgeous setting.  It was when we first fell in love with living amongst the trees.  They had built a fire pit similar to the original one that we made here a few years back.  Nearly every single Sunday, we built a fire for Sunday Fun Day.

This was at the time when Deb and I both worked a 9-5 outside of the home.  Well.. it was more like 7-6, but you get my drift.  Saturdays were filled with grocery shopping, errands, picking up the house, laundry, etc.  We meal prepped for the week on Sunday mornings, and made sure everything was organized and ready to go for the week ahead.  After our chores were done….

Sunday Fun Day started.

We usually started by cleaning up the yard of any sticks or limbs that had fallen during the week.  Once that was done, it turned into Mixie Drinks Sunday.  Ha!  We concocted any type of mixed drinks and continued our camp fires into the evening enjoying the calm before the storm of a new week.  I’m sure you can see now why I miss having our fire pit.  It’s been such a big part of our life.

Our Fire Pit is Done

I am sure you can probably tell that everything we do here on our property is done with the intention of it being around forever.  We have wanted our structures to look like they are older and also made to last with little to no maintenance.  When we started talking about the fire pit here in the woods, we had an inspiration pic that we have had for years.  And, we sent this to our landscaper.

We loved the shrubs behind the fire pit to give it a pretty backdrop.  We also said we wanted some type of natural stone for the base rather than pea gravel like we had before.  So he put his own spin on our inspiration picture and created the most perfect fire pit are for us.

He used natural limestone as the base and planted shrubs and hydrangeas as the back drop.  I’m not sure if you know this but there are hydrangeas sprinkled all over our property.  So this area definitely ties in with the rest of our spaces.  The big boulders also tie in with the landscaping around the house.  I haven’t shared that here but will do that soon.  The actual path to the fire pit ties in with the rest of the paths around our home.  And, he added these landscaping lights that are around the house, as well as Deb’s workshop.

What’s left…

Well, our grass should be planted mid-September, so having that planted around this area will really make it look a lot different.  We are going to get a few more Adirondack chairs for this area.  And, of course, you know that I will be decorating it for fall as soon as the pumpkins are sold in our area.

We absolutely love how his turned out and cannot wait for our first fire in our fire pit.  The last couple of days, we have had temps up in the high 90s so it won’t be any time soon.  Come fall, game is on!

We made a fire pit at the rental for free!  Check out that post here.
