This isn’t your typical home decor post but I wanted to share it with you anyway. If you aren’t on social media, you have never seen this are of our home… our home decor room. When we were in the first stages of planning the layout of our new home build, Deb wanted storage. If you are new here, we have lived in homes of many sizes. In the last eight years, we went from a house with 3,000 square feet to one with 600 sq feet… back up to around 2600 square feet down to one with around 1,100 square feet which was the rental. Only the larger ones had storage. The other two barely even had closets.
We then moved here on the property to the cottage. And, since it was a temporary situation that would turn into a workshop for Deb, we didn’t plan a lot of storage space. That is the reason behind one of Deb’s MUST HAVES for the new house. We planned on having a mechanical room in the basement to house the furnace, water heaters, water softer, etc. And a lot of storage space, as well, for my extra home decor. Recently, we started working on this area and I wanted to share the progress.
Our home decor room is directly below our dining room. And, our dining room is around 15′ x 30’… I believe. So it is a good sized room. Only half of it was used for mechanical part of the house so it left a great size for storage.
I rotate my home decor a lot so this space is so handy for us. The items that we have in here now are things that I still love: vintage and antique items, home decor, and seasonal things. They were all brought over here from the cottage. Deb organized them so that I can easily see what I want to use when switching out our decor.
I figured I would show you these spaces now because soon.. this home decor room will be FULL. We still have the entire storage unit to move here to the new house. Our goal is to do that soon…. “soon” as in maybe next week. Since we are in Ohio, we have to pay attention to the weather. We noticed that we are to have several days that will be around 60 degrees which is highly unusual for this time of year. So what better time to move?
We originally thought of hiring some people to move everything, but we decided it may be better to do it ourselves. As we could go through everything and sort things as we go. Because we know there are a few things that will be donated, sold, etc. So if you are on social media, stay tuned to stories because we will for sure be sharing those shenanigans.
We are so excited to get everything moved from the storage unit to our home decor room… as it will be the last major move in our life time.

The flooring in our home decor room is from Rubber Flooring, Inc. We ordered it for the floor in our workout room and had leftover. So rather than send it all back, we made this room a little better. It helped a lot with the sound and just finished it off.
I shared our home decor room in this post months before we emptied our storage unit. So, I wanted to give you updated photos of it now. Because it looks A LOT different. It’s fuller and a lot more organized. Again, I love being able to come down here to shop our own home with my treasures that I have collected for years.
As you can see, Deb added more shelves for me and placed them so that I could use every square inch of them.
We may earn a small commission when you use one of our links to make a purchase.
This would have been the perfect opportunity to share the flooring used in your storage space?
I don’t understand?
I have shared it multiple times on stories and I forgot here. We got it from rubberflooringinc.com
Can’t wait to see it filled with all your vintage glory and special finds! A Decor Room is huge on my wish list… so glad that you have a space to “shop” all of your goodies! Thank you SO MUCH for sharing!!! ~Gloria in Illinois
It is going to be a game changer! I’m so excited to get everything out of the storage unit and in our home. We have so many goodies which will be fun to share! And more organized 😁
Oh my gosh…. this is a dream of mine!! A room to store ‘all the things’ so that you can shop from your own storage. When you love to do decor and switch things up, the storage is definitely a problem. Love yours!!!!! How exciting!
This is such a great space!! How nice for you to finally have everything right there so that you guys can easily redecorate any time you want!!!
We call it the hoda room in our house. Pro: ability to ‘shop’ without spending additional $when I need a refresh. Con: My adult children also ‘shop’ my hoda room for their homes. Which leads to ‘where the heck is my …. fill in the blank. Ha! Another small con: the husband likes to tell others about it. And not in a complimentary way.
I thought that room was in your basement not above your dining room???????????
Oh geez.. I just changed it. It is directly BELOW not above… That was my mistake.
Love your decorating style and I am happy to see your decor room. I don’t have a basement. So, do you have to worry about it flooding. Maybe everything on the floor needs to have some risers. Kudos to building a beautiful home.
Thank you. And, no. New basements don’t typically flood. At least with a great builder they don’t.
Just what every woman longs for!!! Some men, too. This would be so nice to have things there in the house with you, out of the way, but reachable if needed. Great house plan!
Thank you! I am enjoying this room more than I ever thought I would.
I’m new to your site and love your style! I had a floral business for many years out of my home and I noticed right away that you have your shelving on wheels. They are life savers! I recommend them to friends setting up shelving in a basement or garage. So easy to move around as needed to clean, rearrange etc.
I love your storage room for your home decor so much! This is exactly what I need! I move things around too and love to shop my own decor, but I desperately need organized storage for it. Thanks for the inspiration!
I want to come shop in your home decor room! 🙂
This is just stunning and perfect for you both as you like to change things up! I am new to your site and the inspiration I have received from your decorating is so uplifting, exciting and different. I love it all, keep up the good work! My only question now is how can we get some of your energy? Love it all.
hahaha awwww thank you. We are two people who love to “get things done.” Our dads were both the same way in their younger years.
Danielle…GIRLFRIEND you literally made me holler with most happiest screech EVEeeeeR’ 🤣 Me scrolling through showing off your gorgeous headboard as inspiration for what I want…haha then seen the updated photo tag so of course I have to swoop in and zoom to see all your MAGNIFICENT BETTER than PB, Kirklands and so on! I yelled OH MY DAAYUUUM Heaven Help me LAWD’T (sorta Madea style 🤭) You and Deb make such a fantastic team at getting your dream of a home & all the adventures of DIY’ING!! You two are ROCKSTARS and so glad I get to follow along on this beautiful ride! If I ever have broken a commandment (which I do my best not to) it is definitely not to covet your neighbors stuff lol well that one is blown out the water totally but I’m glad HE knows my heart! Lol Hope y’all have an amazing rest of the wk!!

hahah Thank you so much for the kind words. And, thanks for following along. I’m assuming you are talking about the headboard that was once a laminate cherry wood?? If so, I still love it and think it looks antique.
