You guys, I’m dying. We are STILL working on Project Backyard. Just to refresh your memory, we rented a bobcat with a jack hammer attachment last week to bust up what was previously a basketball court in our backyard. Half of the basketball court was all whopper jawed and the other half was in pretty good shape. Thank goodness, the good section is up by the house which is the future site for our pergola.
We decided to repurpose most of the concrete into our paths, by using the bigger pieces as stepping-stones. We will then haul in packing stone to fill in the grooves. We repurposed the smaller pieces of concrete between the spaces of the “stepping-stones” which means the paths will require less packing stone. Lord knows, less is more in this case due to my 150 year old aching body.
We practically LIVE outside when possible! We drink our coffee out back in the morning and drink our beers out there at night. Therefore we prefer our outdoor spaces just as “pooped up” as the inside of our house. We love a “tucked in” cozy feeling for privacy around our outdoor spaces, so we decided we wanted flower beds around two sides with shrubs and flowers both. But, that meant we had to haul in dirt – two whole loads to be exact. It worked out with our schedule that we could only get our dirt on the days that Deb had to work at her part-time gig. So Me, Myself, and I unloaded two truckloads of dirt and I am dead. ????
Seriously. The weather here in Indiana is terribly hot in July. I had sweat in places I didn’t know you could have sweat. And, I swear at one point, I was so stinky, that the smell vanished. That must mean one thing. The smell was so bad that it was undetectable to the human nose. ????
I ran out 100 mph to snap this picture of the construction zone because of the heat, which is beastly today. Ignore the ladder, the extension cord, the garden hose, and all of the junk sitting around. I can guarantee, it won’t be there for long. We just purchased our pergola supplies which will be delivered on Monday.
Oh, and we shan’t forget about the big trees we are having delivered tomorrow. ???? I can hardly contain myself.
Thanks so much for stopping by. I will be posting pictures of our new trees tomorrow on Facebook and Instagram the moment they arrive. Have I mentioned I’m excited? ????
What do you think about the repurposed concrete idea? Have you ever done anything this ridiculous? Deb thinks we are the only ones who are cray. ????
Buh bye, now!

Hi Danelle, Love everything you’re doing to that beautiful house. Repurposed concrete looks good too but can’t imagine lifting those big pieces. Could you tell me the name of the nursery where you’re getting that big tree? We need one and that place looks like they have some nice ones! Thanks !!!
Thank you so much! And, we got them from Fort Wayne Trees. They had some really nice ones.
Those look so awesome back breaker for sure but looks awesome
Thank you. My back is broken. I hope to rest for a few days.
I remember I helped my sister months ago working and beautifying her small garden. We did not use concrete but instead we used big and small stones 🙂
It’s a lot of hard work, huh? Glad that project is over. I catch myself saying that to almost every project anymore. ????
[…] you remember the large concrete pieces at our last house? We repurposed them into paths and used them as steps. Well, I got the idea to make a larger landing area out the back door here at the rental using […]
