Let’s review. We started with Trashed Tuesday. It is when Deb transforms something that was going to be thrown out (or was donated) into something different. We did a series like that when we owned our storefront. I loved it. However, after a few weeks of Trashed Tuesday pieces, we were having a hard time finding anything to re-do. Deb loves to make things out of scrap wood that was leftover from other projects. So, I changed the name to Transformation Tuesday. If she found an item to transform or she was transforming scrap wood into something else, it would all make sense.
Well.. she has been actually purchasing wood for some of these projects. So it only makes sense to change the name of this series to Tuesday’s Treasure. EVERYTHING will be covered with Tuesday’s Treasure. And THAT is my final answer.
Atlas, one of the grandsons, had an upcoming birthday. He turned 1. His mom asked Deb to make a cake stand for his smash cake. She wanted to use it for his actual smash cake and also for his photos. Deb LOVES this type of project. They are simple and quick. She actually had the round unfinished board in her stash. You can get these at any home improvement place. They come pre-cut, in different woods, and a few different sizes.
She got all fancy and cut out several pieces of a 1×4 at angles and attached them for the base. You could actually use an old wooden column, a candlestick, or really anything. And then cut out a circle from scrap wood and attached it to the bottom for extra support.
Deb and I have both come up with several different techniques to paint items and make them look old. I have shared them a few times: How to Make New Wood Look Old and Quick Paint Technique. This is what she did on this little wooden cake stand. It is really simple to do. She added more stain on the top to make it darker and then used spray polyurethane to protect the piece.
I got a lot of questions over on social media about the chemicals from the paint and poly and the cake. We didn’t worry about it because there was a piece of cardboard between the cake and the cake stand. AND, it was only going to be sitting on the cake stand for a few minutes.
I think it turned out so dang cute. I actually want it back for a day or so to style if different ways in the house for you. And maybe give you some ideas.
