New Home Build

Antique Doors for the Guest Bathroom are Hung

I changed the layout of the guest bathroom a little during the building phase of our house. I wanted the tub in the middle of the bathroom window rather than on the side like we originally planned.  Actually, I think we originally planned a shower with a tub, but then I had this vision of having a gorgeous soaker tub.  Anyway, when we changed the layout, we had to switch the doorway to the middle of the wall.  Which meant one large slider door wouldn’t work.  We needed two small slider doors on the outside.  Well, I am happy to say that my vision is coming to life and the antique doors for the guest bathroom are hung!

Antique Doors for the Guest Bathroom

Do you remember when we drove a little over an hour away to pick up these two antique doors to use on the guest bathroom?  They popped up on the Facebook Marketplace, and I knew I needed them.  They were in ROUGH shape.  Once we got them home, I started sanding off the old finish.  The finish came off really easily along with some of the veneer.  Deb started gluing the veneer back down and holding it with clamps.  Well… since we are out of room, the doors had to be stored in the garage here in the cottage.  Which caused some more veneer to loosen up.  It seemed like every time we looked at these antique doors, there were more bubbles in them.  Deb actually said a few times, “These doors are never going to work.”  And I even heard her talking about burning them a few times.

Well, the finishing crew was ready for these doors this week.  We took them over to the house and explained that we have some more work on them.  But, they can go ahead and hang them.  They did.  And, I love them!

What’s left to do on the antique doors…

Deb needs to finish repairing a bit of the veneer.  They aren’t bad at all.  In fact, she almost has them done.  One of the glass panes is missing, so we need to replace that.  And we are trying to figure out what to do about privacy.  We have a few options.  We may use the spray paint that makes the glass frosted.  Or we may use some privacy window film that I already have in my stash.  It is really simple to install and can be removed pretty easily if we don’t like it.  And, I love that there will still be light streaming through when the doors are closed.

Oh… and Deb found this slider online.  They are “soft close” like kitchen cabinets and kitchen drawers.  And, they are pretty swift.

I couldn’t wait to share these antique doors with you all.  I absolutely love how they look now that they are hung on the landing.  And I still can’t believe Deb was talking about burning them.

Thanks so much for stopping by every day to see what we are up to.  I appreciate it more than you know.

  • Your energy and enthusiasm for all projects is so precious and contagious! Love following your journey to the new house completion.

  • I love how everything is turning out! This is the perfect way to finish a home that you really want to seem old and have the character to make it that way. You two are so talented and have the best ideas! I’ve grown up with my Dad being a custom home builder and my Grandma’s home was filled with treasures and antiques she hunted for and collected her entire life so being around construction and antiques my whole life, I can truly appreciate what you are doing. Thanks for sharing everything on your blog! As I’ve said before, I’m no longer on social media so I miss a lot so I appreciate what I can catch up on here. Looking forward to continuing the journey with you here!
