I have said so many times that we want all of our structures to look like they have been on our property forever. For months, I have been trying to figure out what I wanted behind the antique fireplace mantel in the cottage. I toyed with the idea of horizontal shiplap, vertical shiplap, bead board, wallpaper that looked like brick, etc. This idea of adding faux brick to the fireplace wall popped into my head in the night. That happens a lot. I think it’s because my brain relaxes enough for things to become clear. ????
Anyway… we headed to Menards to brainstorm.
We didn’t want to spend a lot of money on the wall treatment and we wanted to keep it simple. I thought brick would look realistic but I know how expensive that can get. So we decided to try to create the same look of real brick using inexpensive brick panelling. Menards has only a few in-stock options that are in white, gray, and red. We thought the red seemed to have a little more texture so we went with that.
It was very simple to install. We hung it with our nail gun directly to the drywall/studs. I filled all of the seams with several coats of spackling. And to be honest, if I didn’t know where they were, I would have to look really hard to find them. I gave the bricks three coats of the paint that I will be using on the trim. It is white right off of shelf of Sherwin Williams (no mixing) in a satin sheen. And, I couldn’t be happier with how this project turned out.
Oh… and our fireplace insert is electric so we shouldn’t have any issues with the heat.
This was such a simple process and made a HUGE impact. What do you think?

It looks fantastic and was a great choice! I was actually looking at this same faux brick to use as a backsplash in my garage kitchen hubby is making me. Thanks for letting us follow along in the Ivy and Woods Cottage build!
Yay!.... I have seen that done too and it looks spectacular. And, thank you for hanging out with us.
Absolutely love it! You two are amazing!
Thank you! We are having so much fun with this part.
Frankly, I don't care what you do, it's all very entertaining. I'm excited just to be invited along for the ride (wish I had a whiskey sour beside me t make it even more fun). Still, I love seeing empty land become a home. And you'll make it look fabulous.
hahahah Awww... thank you so much.
Fiquei alguns ias sem ler seu blog, muito trabalho por aqui, e muito surpresa com a casa já em pé, parabéns
Thank you so much. We are getting a lot of work done.
Did you have any trouble lining up the bricks with the different sheets of brick? The final reveal looks stunning!
