Hello, again!   I am in the midst of telling you about our bathroom remodel, but in order for you to fully understand the following pictures of our bathroom, I need to skip to the kitchen.

See all of this gorgeous wood?   Well, it’s not gorgeous YET, but it’s wood.  When we first saw this knotty pine in the kitchen, we knew we wanted to do something exciting.  We thought it would be really simple to rip out those original 4,000 pound, site-built plywood cabinets and we would, of course, be left with gorgeous wood walls and ceiling.  Ok, in hindsight, that sounds dumb.

But, honestly though, we were planning on leaving all of the wood walls and ceilings in the kitchen and painting them my favorite shade of white.

But, come on now, things can’t be that easy.  As any other remodeling project, things go amiss.

Old home renovation problem number 4,633:  You never know what you will find (or not find) inside the walls.

We discovered after completely gutting a different room, there was absolutely not one shred of insulation in the entire house, which meant removing all of this original knotty pine.   Which also meant getting a crew here to have insulation blown in all exterior walls and the attic.  Blown Insulation = Blown budget.    Fun times!

Removing all of the wood from the four walls and the ceiling was a horrible job considering it was tongue and groove.  I swear, builders used to use 3 foot long nails in the olden days.   If you have ever tried to pry old tongue and groove boards held together with 3 foot nails, you have felt our pain.  We destroyed close to half of the boards during the process.  We did, however, salvage enough pieces to use sparingly in a few different rooms of the house.

Bathroom Remodel

Which brings us back to the original conversation about the bathroom remodel.  We quickly removed the wallpaper that adorned the bathroom walls.  As in quickly removed, I mean it was one of the first things we did.   It was very outdated.  OK….A LOT outdated.   If you want to see it, click back to yesterday’s post, where I showed the before pictures of this space.

We wanted to do something EXCITING on one the bathroom walls.  You know… something like shiplap.  And, what’s better than shiplap, but FREE tongue and groove knotty pine boards from the kitchen.      (And by the way, if you don’t know what shiplap is, I’m not sure we can be friends.)

We spruced up the wall behind where the vanity will be installed by hanging the knotty pine boards horizontal, rather than vertical, as they originally were hung in the kitchen.

The bathroom was then painted my favorite shade of white:  Sherwin Williams, Pearly White.  I even like the name of it!

And, of course, we installed the inexpensive pine board flooring.

Are you sensing a theme here?

Yes.  We painted our entire house my favorite shade of white and every room has the inexpensive pine board flooring.  I know.  To many of you, that is very, very boring, but I am very sensitive when it comes to color.  I enjoy seeing lots of colors in other people’s homes, but my home is a place for me to relax and regroup.  Therefore, that space needs to be calm.  I have realized that keeping our space light, bright and cohesive brings me peace.  And don’t we all want a little peace in our lives?

If you saw yesterday’s post, I showed you the antique buffet that we repurposed into our vanity.

Since we knew the dimensions and style of this piece of furniture, the plumber took all of that into consideration and brought the plumbing up through the wall rather than the floor.  What a good boy he was!   That meant we didn’t lose storage space in any of the 3 doors and the bottom drawer is still full sized and completely functional.  Yay, me!

Now, I sure don’t like to leave you with only the case of the uglies, so I will give you a peek of the bathroom vanity after I painted it using the “vaseline” technique, which gives it an original worn look.  I will throw together a post some time of how that is done.
