Bead Board Wallpaper in the Kitchen

We started a new series over on social media.  It’s called From Flat to That.  It is something that I absolutely could not wait to start.  All summer long, while we worked on our outdoor projects, I was dreaming of ways to add texture to the inside of our home.  Well, I started this series last week, and I added bead board wallpaper in the kitchen.  I LOVE the results.

Bead Board Wallpaper in the Kitchen

The original plan was to add wood bead board to the kitchen walls.  Originally, we were going to use the tongue and groove bead board that we used in Deb’s workshop.  And then we decided to use the 4’x8′ bead board paneling because it is thinner.  Well, I saw someone over on Instagram who used bead board wallpaper so I decided to order it for the kitchen project. I have used paintable, textured wallpaper in the past and loved the look.  However, the bead board wallpaper wasn’t as detailed back then as it is now.

I chose to paper around the 6′ mark simply because I love that look. And then Deb added trim all around the top.  She used a 1×4 and then added a 1×2 on the top of that.  I love how it turned out and think it looks completely authentic and just like it came out of an old farmhouse.

Pros for using bead board wallpaper:

  • Very simple installation – This particular wallpaper is pre-pasted, which is what I prefer.  I have only used peel and stick one time in the pantry and I’m not a fan.  I feel this is so much easier to work with.  Hanging wall paper is so much simpler than adding tongue and groove boards and paneling to the walls, too.
  • Cost Effective – I think I may have about $40-$45 of wallpaper in this kitchen project.  Deb added the trim above it so that added to the cost of this project.  I am sure it would cost more to use the wood bead board.
  • No baseboard / trim issues – We have 3/4″ baseboards and trim, but I didn’t want to lose any of that depth.  If you have thinner trim and baseboards than that, adding wood bead board would cut that depth.

Cons for using bead board wallpaper:

  • Tears and Dents – Because it is paper, it may tear or dent if you bang a piece of furniture up against it.  As I said above, I’ve had this wallpaper before, so I know what to expect. I used to repair and paint it if there was a bad spot.  I don’t really see this as a con but wanted to mention it.  If you have drywall, it will do the same thing.

Other ideas for this bead board wallpaper:

I kept my larger scraps for future projects.  Obviously this would work in any room.  You could paper an entire wall of bead board or you can hang it at the height of 3′ like an old farmhouse.  Install this in the back of a book cabinet or antique china hutch to give it some extra texture.  I think I am going to hang some more in the laundry room since it’s right off of the kitchen.  So stay tuned for that.

By the way, the kitchen is far from done.  We are going to hang horizontal boards around the fireplace and need something for a backsplash.  We originally wanted to use bricks but we have the issue of the trim again.  We would have to remove it and we don’t want to do that.

What do you think? Let me know if you have used this wallpaper before and any other ideas you may have for it.
