I have been promising for a long time to show you how the double closet doors in the bedroom at the cottage came out.  If you remember, we wanted to use old doors.  And since we both have a closet, we wanted two sets of doors that matched.  I threw it out in the universe and it came back to me. ????  Someone contacted me and said that they had four matching doors that may work.  They were different colors but I had planned on painting them anyway.  Here is what we did!

Double Closet Door Idea

I knew from the get go that I didn’t want bifold closet doors and I didn’t want the sliding closet doors.  We did this same thing when we lived in our tiny house.  We used two old doors on a closet that Deb and I shared.  It works perfectly.  You can see everything in your entire closet, which is a must for me.  Things get shoved to the back and they are never seen or worn again.  It doesn’t happen when you have these double closet doors that both open.

We had the contractor actually hang the doors and Deb trimmed around each set, making them look all fancy.  ????

Hardware for the Closet Doors

One of the most popular questions I kept getting when we talked about hanging the doors like this was how are the doors going to stay shut.  Well.. leave it to Deb.  She used to work in the hardware store so she knows her hardware.????   She ordered these closet door ball catches and installed them at the top of each door.  And, they work perfectly to hold them shut.  Since there was a space between the doors, she added a piece of trim to one of the doors to disguise the space.

The contractors who installed the doors used the old hinges that were on the doors.  As far as door knobs go, we have a stash in the storage unit.  And we happened to have four matching antique knobs.  The hinges and strike plates were rusty and non matching, but I used a little RubNBuff on them to get them to coordinate.

I love how the doors came out.  They not only look pretty, but they are so functional!  If you have the same issue as I do with losing your clothes in the back of the closet, this is a great double closet door idea you could try.

Let me know what you think!

  • Those ball hinges are genius!!!! We have a set of double doors leading to a study and have no way to keep them closed - this is really excellent thank you

  • I love how you manifest things into being.???? I love everything about these matching doors. So much prettier than regular sliders. My favorite detail are the knobs & plate behind them. The latch is really cool too. You both have such a good eye for detail.
