Create a Custom Candle with Regular Glass Jar Candles

If you stop by my house any time of day, more than likely I am burning a candle. I am not choosy as far as brands go because I can always seem to fine some that smell good. My favorite scents are that of baked goods… cinnamon, vanilla, pumpkin. It gives me that warm and cozy feeling. I will never forget. When my girls were young, they, of course, had their friends spend the night a lot. I walked into their elementary school for a bake sale one year and it smelled heavenly. One of their friend’s mom said that her daughter walked in and said, “The school smells like Danelle’s house.” Because I have never found a pillar candle that smelled heavenly, I usually purchase the glass jar candles because of their strong scents. But I don’t like the looks of a jar candle. Soooo… I have a trick that I have used for years and wanted to share how to create a custom candle with a regular glass jar candle.

I love the look of custom candles in little antique tins, crocks, and bowls, and you know I have my fair share of all of those items. One thing that I love to do is to create a custom candle in some of my favorite pieces by simply breaking the glass off around my favorite scented candle. And popping them down into one of my favorite bowls. It’s so easy to do.

*If you want to wear protective gear, go for it. I don’t. Just be careful.

Place your glass candle into 3 plastic grocery sacks. I triple bag for protection. Simply tap the glass jar with a hammer and break it off. I usually use a thick layer of paper towels to wife off any little pieces of glass that may be left on the candle. And then place my candle in a new container. I love to use old bowls, tins, brass containers, etc.

Tips for picking the right size container…

If your container is too large for the candle, the candle will melt faster. So I like to keep them no more than 1/2″ bigger. When the candle wick is burned down, you can simply pop the remaining wax out with a knife. Or run it under hot water!

I have heard from several people asking why I just don’t melt the candle in a pot of boiling water and pour it directly into a new container. And hold the wick straight up until the was hardens. Listen… Ain’t nobody got time for that. ???? This is a 30-second fix and it’s been working for me for years.

I do something similar, but because our recycling company won't pick up broken glass, I put my candles in hot water til they soften enough to slide out, then I just turn them over again in my chosen container, no holding the wick, and put the now empty, but recyclable jar in the bin for recycling day. Taking a couple minutes longer reduces my carbon footprint and makes me feel a bit better about myself. Bonus, I still benefit from pretty smelling and looking candles.
