In-Feed Inspiration: Veggie Gardens

We are in full gardening mode this week! With the combination of prepping our coop for the new chickens, going to Alaska, and getting Covid all in two-week’s time, we are running behind schedule in terms of getting our plants in the ground.

This is our first year fully committing to raised beds so it has been a more labor-intensive job, but we are so excited about it as well. If you missed our plans for the garden, check it out here.

So, let’s take a look at some accounts, tips, and tricks from both Instagram and Pinterest that I found helpful when preparing our vegetable garden.

Veggie Garden Edition

The Free Range Life

Sarah from The Free Range Life has such a broad range of DIY vegetable garden tips as well as tips for homesteading, preserving food, and raising goats. I especially loved her pin, The Complete Guide to Garden Spacing. It gives a complete list of crops with ideal spacing between individual plants and rows! She also explains why this is important in terms of plant health, room for roots and growth, and ease of harvesting. Such great information!

Homestead and Chill

Deanna from Homestead and Chill is an organic gardener. Her pin that caught my attention was Companion Planting 101. She discusses the importance of companion planting and also includes a free chart of which plants grow the best next to each other. For example, did you know that its typically suggested not to plant peas and onions next to each other? That was a new one for me, also!

Grown By You

Grown By You is a guide to help you grow your own garden! There is so much knowledge shared by this account, but something I took away is succession planting which is really important if you are replanting beds using the same dirt year after year. It is important to rotate what type of plants you are putting in a particular planter to help the soil maintain the right nutrients.

Home Gardening With Pete

Pete has all the special tricks to planting a successful garden! Did you know you can mulch with shredded paper? He also gives a list of all the bugs that act as garden predators and protect your plants from other destructive pests.

Our Gardening Adventure

Sharon from Our Gardening Adventure jumped head first into gardening and hasn’t looked back since! You especially need to check out her polytunnels. Her planting techniques and produce are just beautiful!

Deb and I can’t wait to infuse some of the tips and techniques we learned from these accounts into our own garden this year!
