Large Urn and Plans for the Garden Area

We planted our garden so dang late this year.  It had been raining off and on regularly in May so we were dealing with so much mud.  And then it would be 30 below zero (not literally)….  So we got our garden out, I believe May 30.  Here in Ohio, we have our “safe” planting day which is the week after Mother’s Day which puts it mid-May.  We had SO MANY PLANS for this area but it all had to be put on hold. 

Number one, we need to bring in lots of dirt for that area.  It is a low spot outside of the woods where it will get lots of sun.  Number two, we have a lot of dirt here on the property to be used as backfill to the house once they are done.  Therefore, we didn’t want to buy dirt to raise our garden area in case we have extra.  Number three, we are going to make raised garden beds for the entire area.  Well…  the dirt needs to come first.  So we decided to plant all of our garden directly into the ground this year and keep our fingers crossed for a great harvest.

If you missed it, I wrote an article a few years back about the garden method that we use. It truly is the best.  We did that this year and haven’t pulled but a few weeds and we haven’t had to water either.  But to be fair, we have had a TON of rain… but for the regular seasons, we don’t water then either.

Anyway… we have so much planned for the garden including raised garden beds, a fence around the garden to keep any critters out in the future, landscaping around the fence, a large arbor to enter the garden, and a huge urn for flowers as a focal point in the walkway. 

We recently took a trip to southern Indiana to go to our all-time favorite concrete place, The Concrete Lady, in Otisco.  If you have a shop, you can go pick up things wholesale, and you can also shop retail.  They have everything you can possibly think of in terms of concrete:  animals, religious statues, concrete furniture, planters, fountains, EVERYTHING.  We went to grab a large urn that I talked about above to use as a focal point for our garden.  We thought that was probably an important step when planning the rest of the garden boxes and the placement of them.

It took the skid loader to get this into urn and this base into place.  We will, of course, wait until next year to add the flowers but I think it will be so pretty.  I shared the day we went over on our Instagram stories and have had so many questions about the location.  It’s a really fun place to visit!
