Old Concrete Pieces for Projects

We are a sucker for old concrete.  I have no idea why.  Maybe because it has a history.  And, old pieces of concrete look like they match our style more than NEW concrete.  Maybe it’s just us who think this.  Do you remember the VERY FIRST project we shared with old pieces of concrete?  It was at our old house on Winchester.  The previous owner had ripped up an old sidewalk and threw all of the pieces into a huge pile in the backyard.  We knew we would have to pay money for someone to come and haul it away, so we decided to use it.  We started by separating all of the different sizes and putting them in a pile accordingly.  Once we got all of the smaller pieces off of the top, the LARGE, HEAVY pieces were beneath. We moved every piece by hand!

We ended up using every single piece of that pile in some form or another.  We made paths and lined our flower beds and one of the largest pieces was the step for our chicken coop.  It looked like it had always been there.  Do you also remember the little garage we had hauled onto the property a few years back?  That was another concrete project we tackled.  Except this time, we hauled all of the concrete here to the woods ourselves.  That was a doozy of a project.  We made a sidewalk and added a huge piece that we used as the step again.  AND… someone gave us two huge pieces of concrete that we used as an approach for the garage.   We can always find something to do with it.

Old Concrete Pieces for Projects

When our neighbor, the one who gave us the old fountain last year, text and asked us if we wanted a huge pile of concrete, our initial thought was… No. We envisioned a bunch of little pieces which we wouldn’t need for anything.  We received a photo.  Huge stack of BIG pieces of concrete equals LOTS of fun cool projects.  Plus.. this year we have the skid loader with a bucket and forks.  No turned into Yes pretty quickly.

Today was the day that we ran down to get them.  Some of these pieces are probably 5′ wide.  We have so many ideas for this concrete and since we have about 5 acres total, we have lots of places to stack them if we don’t have a use for them just quite yet.  But, the first thing we want to use one piece for is just what we used it for at the old house – A step up into the coop.  I love the look and think it looks really random, especially once we landscape around it!  See the progress on the coop here!  Also…see some of the other items we found for the coop that we will be adding shortly.

You know I will for sure post here every little thing we do with these huge old pieces of concretes.  There will be many, many projects to come.
