If you aren’t on social media, you don’t even have a clue about the saga that went on regarding this wall in the kitchen. I have truly been trying to figure out over the last couple of months what I was going to do with the sink wall. Because it has three large windows above the sink. I kept thinking that wall would be really boring. Come to find out, that wall is beautiful just the way it is. (I will be sharing that later.) Well… once we started working on the stove wall, my original plans took a giant dump. Do you remember when we grabbed some antique cabinets off of the marketplace to hang on each side of the range hood? Well, Deb worked on them last weekend for HOURS over the course of three days. We hung the first one and felt MEH. I thought we would LOVE them and neither of us did. So back to the drawing board we went. I have always loved open shelving and thought that was the best thing for this area. Today, I wanted to share our open shelving in our kitchen.
I am sure some of you are asking yourselves why we just didn’t have cabinets made for this space. Well… we are different. I love mixing old with new which was my original thought with those antique cabinets. We talked briefly about having two cabinets made but quickly stopped that nonsense talk. Because it’s just not our style. Our new kitchen has several large windows which we absolutely love. It was actually one of our requests when we talked to the architect. BUT… that means we have no wall space for an antique cabinet to display all of our collections which I like to incorporate into every area. It is what I was going to do with the antique cabinets we bought for this area.
Like I said above, I have always loved open shelving and actually have one planned for the laundry area, too. We decided it would be really nice to have them in the kitchen to display my collections. BUT… we had to keep in mind that the range hood is a huge statement piece in our kitchen. We didn’t want to make the shelves really fancy and compete with the look of the range hood. We also didn’t want to make them so small that they would get lost.
I kept telling Deb that I had stage fright for making a decision on them, because of what happened with the cabinets. It felt like everything we tried was wrong. She would go out to the workshop and throw a shelf together. Both of us would feel MEH, again. Back out to the workshop to revamp what she just did. We still had a feeling of MEH. Finally, she used a 2 x 10 for the shelf, rather than a 1 x10, due to the size of the range hood. And, it started coming together.
A few more adjustments to her original plan and she came up with this idea. Normally, we would never make shelves out of 2″ boards but the range hood was throwing us off. We had them painted the same color as the wall so that they weren’t accented… they are just there for my pretties. I will be adding some old hooks to the shelves so that I can hang other items to display. And I absolutely love how they turned out. I threw a few random pieces up on the shelves for these photos so this will all change. Stay tuned for some shelf styling sessions soon!

Other than wishing they were a few inches longer (more space for cool stuff), I think you hit it.
You’re the one standing in the room so I’m guessing your eye is more informed.
Have fun styling!
I am looking forward to seeing your open shelves in your laundry room. I love the kitchen shelves. I have been searching for any ideas for laundry but am stuck. Help!!!
Oh stay tuned. I have a few ideas for that room.
Thank you. And we tried longer ones, they didn’t look right We wanted to leave room on the one side for curtains.
I love them. Can you tell me how the shelf was hung? I have one similar my husband built, but want to hang it secure with no hardware or screws showing.
Thanks!
I am going to add to this post with how she did it. She attached the shelf directly into the studs with screws and then added that 2 x 2 board on the front under the shelf to disguise the screws.
I LOVE IT! ❤️. Will you share how to print the pic??? 🤶🏻. Please.
