Reflecting on Last Year and Setting Goals for the New Year

Happy New Year – 2019!

Now is the time!  Now is the perfect time for me to set my goals for 2019.   Notice that I didn’t say “resolutions.”  Because I have broken each and every resolution that I have ever set in my 153 years of living by the end of January.  ????  I know I am not the only one.  OK, maybe not every single one of them, but almost.  I prefer to call them “goals” because that is something this gal can reach.  Her goals!    I write my list of goals every single day.  And, because I have problems with thinking I can get WAY more done in one day than humanly possible, sometimes the daily goals cannot possibly be reached.  But, they eventually are.

I thought it would be fun to do an entire blog series each Monday breaking down small goals that I have set for myself.  Because my “goals list” is always expanding, I will be continually adding to it.   This will also keep me accountable by sharing with you my progress.  Writing goals down on paper, or blogging in my case, seems to help me stay on track.  It also may motivate you to make some changes in your own lives that you’ve been wanting to do.

Reflecting on Last Year

I went into the year 2018 with an attitude that it was going to be the best year EVER.  I remember sitting in our hot tub at the end of 2017 with a cocktail in hand (shocking, I know) saying to Deb, “This is it… Good things are going to happen in 2018.  I feel it!” ???? And they did.  2018 didn’t fall short of any of my expectations.

I reached more goals in this little business of mine than I ever set out to do.  I got to work with several companies including QVC…. Once was to celebrate National Handbag Day and once for a campaign with Clarks Shoes.  We got our entire master bedroom by adding new wallpaper and new bedding.  We enjoyed the Pink concert in Indy to celebrate Deb’s 50th birthday in March.  And, ended up taking a last minute weekend getaway in Brown County to regroup.  And we even took a week long trip to Florida.  Some of you are probably thinking…. “WOAAAA…. A trip and a concert.  That’s nothing, old lady.”  It truly is something when you would rather be home.  ????  People have asked us a million times where is the one place we would love to visit.  Deb’s answer is always, “I would rather look at a picture of a vacation spot from the comfort of my own couch.”  And, I feel the same way.

Since we are homebodies, I usually have to force myself to plan all the things.  They never sound fun to me until I am actually walking out the door.   But what a difference it makes mentally.  We had THE BEST time at the Pink concert and vowed to attend at least one concert each year since then.  We hadn’t seen anyone in concert for over 15 years. ???? Last year, we didn’t leave the state of Indiana all Winter.  And, I remember being very hostile being stuck in my house in April because it was still snowing.   As soon as it thawed, we made a promise to each other that we will ALWAYS go somewhere to get away because… NEVER AGAIN!  Therefore a trip was an accomplishment.

Setting Goals for the New Year

I have been jotting down all of my personal goals and changes that I want to make in the year 2019.  It includes everything I have stated above plus more.  I want to get my life organized.  I don’t mean just my physical environment, but I mean EVERYTHING.  My days need to be more efficient because I have the tendency to fly by the seat of my pants.  That is a good thing to an extent, but I think I pushed that envelope a little in 2018.  ????  I have some plans to keep me more on track in the new year.

Self care is another thing that needs my full attention.  I’m not just talking about a healthy diet and exercise, but I mean self care of my emotional and mental state as well.  To be completely happy, everything needs to be in balance.  You can’t be physically fit and be an emotional basket case inside.  I think it all goes hand in hand.  But more about all of that later in the series.

I will keep you all informed of the vacations we take and where we go… and who we will be seeing in concert this year.  Who knows.  We may get really wild and crazy and take a weekend getaway trip AND see a concert all at the same time.  Look at us go!  ????

I LOVE to meal plan!  Planning a weeks worth of meals does several things.  It saves money, shortens time at the grocery store, and helps me stay on track more with healthy eating.  That’s a win, win, win for me.  I may share some of those ideas with you since my plan is to eat a little more healthy this year, too.  I mean, I say that every year so I can’t change now.

Those are just a few!

I have many more goals as far as projects around the house and some big ticket items we would love to purchase in the year 2019.  I truly believe when you speak things aloud, it gives them power.  Therefore, you will be hearing from me regularly this upcoming year about this subject.  I have lots of fun content planned in 2019 so stay tuned.  Also, if there is anything you want to hear from me about, feel free to leave a comment.  Or you can chat with me over on Facebook or Instagram.  I love to hear from you guys.

I would also love to hear the goals you have set for yourselves.  Now is the time to start anew!

  • Would love to hear more about your meal planning and I want to be Deb when I grow up. You guys have brought me so much joy on Instagram. Thanks a zillion times for that!!

  • Thank you both for taking us on this crazy journey we call life...day in and day out. Now, what are you making us for dinner?

  • Love to hear about meal planning and recipes...especially for two. I'm such a homebody as well so one of my goals is to get out more but I also have to schedule the outing or I will have 1000 reasons not to go. Looking forward to following you in 2019!

    • hahaha trust me. I do the same. We have to MAKE ourselves go some place otherwise we would stay home.

  • I would be very interested in hearing more about your meal planning. I hate hate hate to cook; but I have to do it. It is only for my husband and I but I really dislike cooking. Part of the problem is that my husband has very irregular hours. He owns his own retail store. So he may come home at 6:00, 6:30, 7:00. So it is very hard to prepare a meal and have it have to sit there until he comes home. He is not that picky of an eater although he isn't into anything spicy so if I prepare Mexican food, it's not his favorite and it is mine.

I like your idea of setting goals and not resolutions. My plan is to set a daily goal of organizing something. A drawer, a closet, etc. If I look at the whole picture it is too overwhelming. So I am going to break it down. Thank you for all the laughs you provide. And I live in Nebraska so I too understand the long long winter days when it feels like bedtime at 6:30~~~

    • Awwwwww.... I get it. I struggle so back with the darkness. I feel like it's time to go to bed at 6. We are out of town for a week coming up, so I plan on getting all of my goals started after that. We will be with friends, sooooooooo ????

  • I’m not sure where you are in Indiana, but we follow a fabulous musical family from Columbus, Indiana. Tim Grimm is an amazing song writer as well as a fabulous folk singer. At times he performs with his wife Jan Lucas Grimm, their sons Conor and Jackson. They are all fabulous. Wonderful people as well. You can find his schedule by googling Tim Grimm. Jan Lucas Grimm is also an actress and she’s performing in Indianapolis at the Phoenix Theatre this month in a one woman play called “Apples in Winter.”

We’re from Wisconsin and we traveled with Tim and Jan to the Netherlands in October. It was wonderful.

Not like a Pink concert, but a great experience.

    Loving you on IG!

  • You really are a 'together' person, Danelle, but still so relatable as we all have that dream of creating goals, following through, or not. And then we laugh, but not as cute as you do!! As I get older it has become harder and harder to want to head out, but I do. It's good to have a change of scenery. It actually makes you appreciate home more. The Indianapolis State Fair has awesome concerts and if you make it a weekend trip, the fair is a lot of fun. I love all sorts of music, but you can't deny a country act...okay, I just want to LOOK at Luke Bryan, and Miranda Lambert is such a rebel. Bucket List.

I've told you ladies before, I'm a Chicagoan who has a home on a lake in the country in Michigan, just over the Indiana border. Again. the invitation is extended if you ever head up that coast of Michigan---South Haven, Saugatuck...wherever your hearts take you. We take in guests like stray dogs (errrrr...not like you guys are--forget it). But puleeeeeeeze look me up. A guest house and small time pleasures of kayaking and cocktails on our little beach. And lots of antiquing all around.

I want to give you a big thanks, Danelle, for giving me a like on IG. I've been long-time blogger (and a newspaper columnist, which makes me very longwinded...duh), but IG is a whole new ball game. Maybe someday I'll do stories, I am confident the fifties ain't the end thanks to you both! Kudos, ladies!! :)

    • Oh my gosh... you are so sweet. Saugatuck is one of our favorite places to visit in the Fall. I just love it up there. I will for sure keep that in mind. It sounds like you own a little piece of heaven.

  • Hi Danelle! Happy New Year sweet lady! I want to say thank you to you and Deb for making me laugh every day on IG. I truly look forward to your stories and of course your beautiful pictures on your feed too! Give Ivy a hug for me because she has got to be the sweetest love bug I've seen in forever! HUGS! :)

P.S. I blogged about my health problems this week and if you have time (lol) to read it, I hope you will. Tell all the land, I would never want anyone else to go through what I did!

  • I have recently discovered you and Deb on IG - I love your stories, they start each of my mornings off with a laugh. One of my goals this year is to make headway on our debt load. Although I think we do a decent job at meal planning, we can do better. I loathe the grocery store, so the less time spent there, the better. Sadly, my husband loves the grocery store, and sometimes deviates a bit more from the list than our budget is comfortable with, or worse yet, we end up at the store with no list at all, and that's a recipe for disaster.. A better meal plan and a better list will help our budget and our stress levels!
