Do you remember way back when when we started planning our vegetable garden? Deb and I had this vision. We wanted it to be a great size with raised garden beds for the obvious reasons. The picket fence, which wasn’t really in our original idea, was added as an afterthought. And then came the grand entrance with the old concrete steps. This project got bigger and bigger as time went on. Ha! I know, I know, don’t they all. I love to put areas of our yard and inside the home over the edge a bit and I did so in our garden with lights. These are all solar lights in our garden and they look magical at night.
When we were in the middle of this garden project, I had visions of adding solar lights on top of the pergola entrance. That was my initial thought. And who knows, it still may be done. I also thought it would be cool to string them all across the garden diagonally, but decided against it because of the size. Our garden is roughly 25’x50′. So we would have to add some taller posts to the corners and due to the drape of the lights, they would have to be tall. Also, the wind is terrible here sometimes, especially out at the garden. I just didn’t want to deal with constantly hanging them back up.
So, I got 4 strands of heavy duty string lights and draped them all along our picket fence on all four sides. They have a place on each bulb where you can attach them to a surface with a screw, but I didn’t do that. Like I said, the wind can be terrible and these string lights don’t move. Each strand has a small solar panel that comes with a stake you can put in the ground or a flower pot and also a large clip to attach to nearly anything. I used the clips and attached them to my fence pointing toward the south which is what the directions said. These have a warm colored light which is what I prefer in my outdoor lighting. Also they are the perfect brightness.. not too bright and not too dim.
I immediately knew what I wanted to do with it when I saw it. And I knew I wanted it lit up but didn’t know how to do that. Deb to the rescue. She found this hanging solar light bulb. She removed the outer wire shade and attached the solar panel to the top of the pergola. And, then screwed the light bulb in that vintage light and it looks just like it is hardwired at night. I have another light I want to do this to, as well, but I don’t know where I want to hang it yet.
Deb made these raised garden beds last year with the attached trellis and we thought it would be nice to hang some old looking lanterns on them. I love the look. These lanterns come two to a pack and are at a great price point. They are hard plastic so they hold up well in the wind. I love the look of them hanging on these hooks.
I love the magical look of our garden at night. And I have the hardest time believing that you can power lights from the sun. It’s amazing to me. It’s so handy and easy to hang solar lights. Plus they can be hung anywhere.
