Starting a Tool Collection
This week, we had someone comment that they would love to start doing small projects on their own (without having to ask her husband for help) and asked if Deb could put together a list of all the tools necessary to get started with basic projects around the house. So, that is exactly what Deb did!
STARTING A TOOL COLLECTION
Deb made a list of all the must-have items to get started doing your own projects around the house but she also offered some words of wisdom, and being that Deb is a woman of very few words, this is very important! Ha!
Deb’s top two favorite tool brands will always been DeWalt and Milwaukee, but these aren’t the brands she started with.
“If you aren’t sure that you will use a tool a lot, start with a cheaper brand. You can always upgrade to a more expensive one later, if you find that you use it all the time. I have my favorite brands, but I always like to do my research when purchasing a new tool because there are a lot of great brands out there on different tools.” – Deb
She was also very adamant in noting that Rigid is her favorite shop vacuum brand. Out of all the tool advice possible, she decided it was worth noting!
Beginner Tools
Deb listed 15 tools that she considers essential to getting started! And, beginner tools doesn’t mean that these are the cheap tools. You are the beginner; not the tools! Deb rounded up some great options from Amazon for each of these tools, if you want some suggestions on what to get.

Another tip from Deb is that if you can’t afford a miter saw or if you don’t think you will use it much, start with a circular saw. It will do the job of a miter saw and get you by just fine. The same goes for a jig saw, if you can’t afford a band saw. It will do the same job.

I really appreciate the tool list. I hope we can have a tool school to learn how to use some of the more detailed ones (miter saw etc) Is there a solution to the bags that collect dust on a orbital sander being so small? Can we buy or make a bigger bag? It seems like at one time deb had a sander hooked up to a vacume?
Is there a link to the rack that she has organized her power tools on? I love it and the shelf above it is so smart for the batteries!!!
