The Story Behind our Pieces – Our Candle Cabinet

You are probably thinking to yourselves, what the heck is a candle cabinet.  ????  I didn’t know what else to call it except that.  We store all of our candles in this cabinet here in the cottage.  It had several different lives before being our candle cabinet.  In fact, we used to call it a phone booth, because that’s what Deb thought it looked like.  Anyways..  this little candle cabinet has a fun history.  So I thought I would add it to my series… The Story Behind our Pieces.

You can check out all of the posts in the series if you missed any of them.  Lots of our pieces have been with us for years and they all have a long history.  Which I love to share.  Without further adieu, here is the story behind the candle cabinet.

The Story Behind our Pieces – Our Candle Cabinet

Deb had just lost her job…  ????   And we had just finished up the flip house we had started, so she needed some projects.  You know how much she loves building things.  We found these two old sidelights from an antique door at a garage sale.  I believe they were $10 each.  We have no clue what we were going to use them for.  But, I came home from work one day and Deb had a cabinet started.

She build the cabinet and used the sidelights as two doors.  But it needed something EXTRA… because Deb is always extra.  So she looked through our stash and found a few pieces that were from other antique pieces.

She added on piece to the bottom to dress it up a bit.  And a large one at the top.  I frosted the glass and added two knobs.   To be honest, she has never been a real fan of this piece.  But, I love it.  Because it’s VERY TALL so it makes a big statement.  And, it’s not too deep so it fits in so many different spaces and is so great for storage.

Throughout the years…

It was first used to hold our small television in the basement of our big house in the woods.  When we moved to our old house, the House on Winchester, it was perfect in my office for the printer and lots of office supplies, etc.  It’s a great size for storage.

It was in the kitchen in the rental the entire time we were there.  We used it as an overflow pantry and it held some of our kitchen gadgets.

Once we moved it here to the cottage, I knew what I wanted to do with it.  The shelves she built in this cabinet aren’t adjustable.  I always need some place to store all of my tall candlesticks.  So, I made this into my candle cabinet.  It holds not only my favorite candles, but also my flameless candles, candle sticks, candle holders, and basically ALL candle related stuff.

I am going to give this candle cabinet a fresh coat of paint soon.. along with also painting the doors.  The wood isn’t pretty and it’s pretty dark so I think it will blend better here in the cottage.

I hope you are loving this new series here on my site.  Let me know if there is any other piece of furniture you want to know the history of and I would be glad to make that my next post.  Coming soon will be our kitchen island.  It’s got a GREAT story that I know you will love.

  • I've love this cabinet. I loved how you used it in the kitchen at the rental and now for candles. I absolutely love the design piece at the top. It's just so unique and one of a kind. Paleeeeze don't paint the doors. They are so charming. Love these stories. Thx for sharing!

  • This cabinet is so pretty! I agree with Teri, PLEASE don't paint the doors. I love the two-tone look! :-)

  • What a beautiful cabinet Deb built! It looks like it is the perfect versatile size! Now I'm on the hunt for some similar doors ????
