The Story Behind our Pieces – Our Liquor Cabinet

I have heard from so many of you that you are loving this new series,  The Story Behind our Pieces.  If you have missed some of them, just search up top in the search bar those words and all of the posts will pop up.  I am really enjoying sharing them.

This week, I just had to share the story behind our liquor cabinet.  It hasn’t always been our liquor cabinet but here in the cottage it works perfect for that.  We don’t even drink all of this but Deb loves to have a stash.  ????   It is perfect to have on hand for our Instagram stories where we share different drink recipes with friends, so we are going to go with that.  ????

On to the story of our liquor cabinet.

The Story Behind our Pieces – Our Liquor Cabinet

I was working around the house on a Sunday afternoon last year.   Deb wasn’t home and I was waiting on one of the girls to stop by for a visit. Of course, I don’t see ALL of my messages come in on social media.  I happened to be staring at my phone and a message came in that someone just posted an antique cabinet on the garage sale site.  She knew it was in our town so she messaged me and said that it looks like something we would love.

The ad said that it was out on the porch, it was first come first serve, and it was FREE.  It happened to be down from our old house which was only about two minutes away from the rental.  I hopped in the truck and ran to the address listed.

The cabinet was indeed setting on their porch… which was up about 5 steps.  I did the sniff test to make sure that it didn’t smell …  and decided that I wanted it.  I couldn’t pull into their yard so I left the truck in the alley which was quite a jaunt.  This cabinet is SO HEAVY!

Guarding my cabinet…

I called Deb and she wasn’t going to be home for a few hours.  I called my daughter who was on her way but she wasn’t going to be around for a half hour or so but said she would stop and help.

Not even kidding, there were SO MANY PEOPLE who drove by wanting this antique cabinet.  Several stopped and asked if I was going to take it.  Of course I didn’t want to say, “Yes… but will you help me load it up?”  Therefore, I  stood in front of it, guarding it like it was my job until my daughter got there..  ????   She helped me load it up and Deb helped me unload it when we got home.  I was so excited to have it.

This antique cabinet held my all of my candles when it was at the rental and it now holds all of our liquor.  I love the size of it and it’s perfect to keep all of our glasses in the top part and the liquor in the bottom.  It may get a makeover with paint soon because it has a bright orange cast to it that I’m not fond of.  The details on the doors will really show when painted.

So stay tuned for that.  What do you think of my free antique cabinet?

  • It’s beautiful, I don’t think I would paint it, if it was mine, it looks like a .. Jelly Cabinet, which is old, as you can tell from the hardware, you found a great piece.... All of your stained antique pieces look so good up against your white walls.

  • Omg...what a find! And free!!! ???????????? I never find deals like that. Love your comment “guarding it like it was my job”. ????

  • That’s so totally cool! And also, drink much? Lol JK! It’s all in one spot so it looks like a LOT of alcohol, mine is all over the house so it looks like we don’t have any! Lol wine cabinet, gun safe, kitchen cabinet, yeah, (gun safe) it’s cool and dark! Lol

  • Oh wow! I don’t think I remember this story from last year????. Absolutely love it and the story. Wonder what the story was with previous owner?!? See, I just keep wanting to know more????.

  • Wow - absolutely gorgeous. The detail on the hinge and the knob. I’ve never seen detailed hinges like that! If there’s any way to delete the orange hue while retaining the natural wood like - strip and restain? Or strip and bleach? IMO, it would be worth the effort. I like the light colored wood tones. So pretty! Amazing that someone just wanted to give it up. Especially with the amount of interest it garnered. They could have made some money on it!

  • Love it and the hardware in particular. I don't blame you for guarding it while you were waiting for help to load it. I like it like it is, but look forward to seeing what you do with it. Invite us all over for a drink afterward! You liquor cabinet makes my paltry bottle of Johnnie Walker Red look pretty sad.
