Did you know we have four fireplaces in our home?  We told the architect that we definitely wanted one in the family room and would love a gas one in the bedroom.  I never even thought of the kitchen and the dining room, but she did.  I thought I would give you a little tour of our fireplace mantels today. Because the four fireplace mantels in our home are all antiques and they are all unique.  And, they all have a different story of how we found them.

The Mantels in the Dining Room and the Bedroom

Do you remember when we made a flying trip down to Tennessee to pick up two mantels?  They each got a little bit of a makeover when we got home and I love how they turned out. The one in the bedroom is curvier than the one in the dining room.  But they are made from the same wood, which I believe to be walnut.  We have nothing else made from walnut in our home, but I love mixing and matching different wood tones.  So they work perfectly for me.

The bottom of the walnut mantel in the dining had to be modified a bit because it was a bit too short for our double-sided gas fireplace insert.  Deb had an old walnut board in her stash which matched pretty well with the original color of the mantel.  When the crew was installing all four mantels, they added those pieces on the bottom.  Which I think look authentic to the piece.  One of the guys on the crew actually said this was his favorite one out of all of them.

The Mantel in the Family Room

Not too long after the speeding trip to Tennessee, I found another one on the Facebook Marketplace that was about 2 1/2 hours away from here.  It is currently the one in our family room and that one got a HUGE makeover.  Check out that post if you missed it.  Deb and I sat outside last summer with a heat gun and stripped all of the paint off of this one.  We had no clue, at the time, which room this one was going to go in.  In fact, we were told that we wouldn’t be able to use it at all.  But Deb and I, being the rebels that we are, quickly figured out a solution.  It wasn’t tall enough according to code, so we had the crews add those boxes on the bottom of the sides.  This is the biggest mantel that we have.  It doesn’t look so tall until one of us are standing beside of it.  Ha!

The Mantel in the Kitchen

This fireplace mantel in the kitchen is one we found when we lived in the rental a few years back. It was originally stored behind the bed as a headboard and then in the family room behind the couch.  FYI – We were busting at the seams in that rental.  That mantel landed in the cottage where it got a little bit of a makeover.  I knew it was going to be one of the four in our new home, and it happened to fit perfectly in the kitchen.  I gave it a quick coat of paint to make it match the kitchen temporarily, but need to work on it a bit more. 

FYI – There is always a mile long list of projects in my mind, and this is one on the list.
