This may be the slowest move in history. And, I’m fine with that. We have lived in chaos for so long that both of us have PTSD from it. We had no storage in the rental or the cottage. There were things tucked behind every piece of furniture, and we both got so overwhelmed. We are putting everything away as we move it into the house. And, I am focusing on getting one room put together at a time. The family room is almost done. The last thing that I wanted hung in this room was a simple shelf behind our sofa.
Deb worked her magic a few days ago.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous here in Ohio a few days back and Deb must have wanted to be outside. She said, “Hey… let me know the details of the shelf you want behind the sofa, because I would love to make that today.” What a fun surprise! I wanted something very simple with little detail.
She used several scrap boards to make this shelf. The top is a 2′ x 6′ which is the perfect size. If you are considering a shelf behind your own sofa, take note. If you make it more shallow, you won’t be able to display candleholders, flower pots, urns, etc.
She put a trim board around the top of the shelf as a small ledge to stop anything from sliding off. That trim board also added a really pretty detail. And the bottom of this shelf is something leftover from the construction of the house. I think it was half of one of the stairway columns, but I’m unsure.
I love how this turned out and I think Deb did a great job on this shelf. It is perfect for what I wanted it for… to display home decor. And I have the ability to switch things out when I want without putting a ton of holes in the wall.

Love the shelf. Van you post dimensions?
Deb made it from scrap wood, it is a 2x6. Then we added trim around the edges to give it that vintage look.
I can't believe how good the shelf looks on the wall behind the sofa!!
LOVE the shelf and the way that you have arranged things on it; I am especially in love with that mirror!!!!! GORGEOUS!!!!!
Beautiful! Would you share where your rub came from?
I still have the wonderful shelf that Deb built for over my couch from an upside down bed footboard. Will never ever get rid of it.
It's exactly what your wall needed. It really completes the room.
Absolutely gorgeous !!! I wondered if you can share what sofa you have? Your home is so darn good❤️
Thank you,
Lisa
