Antique Lamp Post by the Cottage

Did you know we love antique lamp posts?  Did you know we have a collection of them?  ????   I am sure you aren’t shocked.  My love of them came about 30 years ago.  My dad called and said he saw two at an auction.  He wanted one and wondered if I would want the other one.  The lamp posts were from an old school that was being torn down.  They sat by the front door on top of these large concrete pads at the top of the steps.  Well, of course, I wanted one.

He taught me how to install it at my very first house that I ever bought.  Every single time I moved, that antique lamp post went with me.  It was first at the school.  My very first house.  We moved it to the house I owned when I got divorced.  It ended up in the front yard at the big house in the woods, then the tiny house which is where it is currently.

The tiny house sold on a whim when it wasn’t even on the market.  We were in the middle of a flip house and remodeling the House on Winchester.  So… I am here to tell you that I’m very sad that we left it.  However, Deb and I decided one day we will stop by the old house.  And, if she isn’t attached to it, maybe we could buy her a new one and install it for her.  If she is, that’s perfectly fine.

Enough of that sad story.  When we were remodeling the House on Winchester, we saw a Craigslist ad for 2 old lamp posts with the glass globes.  She wanted $300 total.  They are getting harder and harder to find so, of course,  we scooped them up.  We had wanted two for the backyard at our old house in the woods but never found them.  They lived at the House on Winchester in the backyard until we sold that place and now they are here.  I love the old patina on them.

We installed one lamp post up by the little garage we brought onto the property last fall.  And we recently installed one here by the cottage.

Several months ago, I was browsing Craigslist again and saw 7 for sale at one place.  The girls who bought our last house bought 2 and we brought home the other 5.  They will be installed along the drive, out by the garden, and one close by the house once it is built.

I cannot tell you how much I love the looks of these antique lamp posts here in the woods.  It gives it such an old feel.  Stay tuned for exactly where the others wind up.

  • I just love these! You two do such great work! My dad has one of these at my home place and has been up for 40ish years! So, every time I see yours, it reminds me of home???? His actually has a BB hole in it???????? but it didn’t break it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. He told me he also has an extra globe????. Love your place so much!

  • I love this and can see why you like these. Can't wait to see what you do with the others. Was the wiring already in place? Getting it wired and mounted must have been quite a project.
