I have the decorating bug. And my job of decorating is just about to start. A few electrical things need wrapped up, and the house is officially done with contractors. Because I have so many ideas for our home, it will never be DONE. We want to add different wall treatments, including wallpaper, possibly brick on a wall in the kitchen, bead board, etc. It will add so much texture. Those projects will be all after we move in and get settled. This range hood is a focal point in our kitchen. And, I wanted something really cool to hang underneath it. My first thought was this mirror that I found on one of our antique shopping adventures. I shared this idea over on our Instagram stories and it was very controversial for various reasons. But, I have had some type of antique mirror above our stove in the last several homes. And I actually love the way it looks.
I am one who follows NO RULES when decorating. I don’t care about trends and I certainly don’t care what everyone else is doing in their home decor. Home decor is a personal thing… just like fashion. So I do what I want. I do what I think looks good, no matter how wild it is. I always say that we are EXTRA. And, I love being that way.
I saw this antique mirror setting in the cottage and realized it was the PERFECT height. I believe it was off of an old buffet so it was a bit long for this space. But, there was a lot of room to trim it down. Deb did that for me and sanded off the old finish, leaving the raw oak wood. I plan on applying a water based sealer to the wood to protect it. The old beveled mirror is just beautiful… along with the beaded trim. I actually had no plans for this mirror as it was a treasure I found this past summer. But I knew I would find a place for it.
I received all kinds of comments when I briefly mentioned this idea over on our Instagram stories.
“YES… that will look beautiful.”
“This will start a new trend.”
“You must never cook a meal in your home.”
“You obviously have a housecleaner, because I would hate to clean that.”
“HARD NO.”
“How are you going to keep that clean?”
“It’s really good feng shui to have a mirror reflecting the burners.”
A popular feng shui adjustment is to reflect your stove burners with a mirror. Your stove represents wealth, so visually and energetically doubling your burners can also double your opportunities for wealth.
We have had a mirror above our stove in the last several homes, including the house on Winchester and here in the cottage. And, I never had any issues whatsoever keeping it clean.
We eat out a total of about 6 times a year. Therefore, we cook every single meal here at our home. No matter what you have behind your stove, it will need cleaned. We don’t deep fry anything… and we use very little oil when we cook. So, in all of the years I have been living with a mirror behind my stove, I have never worried about the grease.
We do have a housecleaner come in once a month to do a full cleaning of our home. And, there is never grease splattered all over our mirror. I don’t know, maybe we are cleaner cooks than some people.
Again.. do what you want in your own home. You are the one who gets to look at it every day. Are you TEAM MIRROR? Or are you HARD NO?
Are you in full garden mode yet? We sure are. Gardening and getting our porches…
Gardening is one of Deb and I's greatest passions these days. We not only love…
The planning has begun. Every year we have one major project that we plan around…
We have been feeling recently like we are so busy, but it seems like we…
I have been gluten free for years.. maybe 8-10. So we have had to be…
Another month has come and gone. Can you even believe it?! March went by so…

I love the mirror above the stove! In fact I've been debating about putting one over my stove since I saw it at your house on Winchester!

I’m with you. I always go for looks and what feels and looks right first. It would never have entered my mind about the cleaning aspect. 🤷🏻♀️
I hope it doesn't get too dirty..
ALWAYS… team mirror! I love mirrors and agree 100% with your “do what you want” attitude. Putting a mirror above the stove actually gives the effect of a window or added light to your space. Also, gives the cook an added bonus of keeping an eye on the wine bottle and spouse 😎
Thanks, Connie.
At first I thought, that’s going to get splatters…then I thought…duh…just take it off it’s hanger and clean it. It would be way easier to do than stretching my 5’1” body across the stove trying to clean the backsplash.
That's great, Renee.
Team mirror of course?!? You have to clean behind the burners anyway soooooo, what’s the big deal?!
Glad to have you on #TeamMirror side.
Whatever you do it always ends up looking fabulous.
I was on the fence about this one as you know BUT it made sense that you have to clean up the tiles behind your stove when you cook so why not have a beautiful mirror . I don’t do alot of dying either . Way to go Ladies !! I definitely love that Deb was able to sand it down too .
*Frying !!!not dying lol
Gosh, thank you Danette.
Keep the mirror above the stove …… it’s awesome !!!
Your house , your way !!!
#TeamMirror.....Thanks, Diana.
Team Mirror! I love it!

I think it looks great! Along with everything else you've done.
Thank you, Cheryl.
