Custom Pull-Out Drawers in the Kitchen Island

Another moment that I have been waiting for.  Our custom pull-out drawers in the kitchen island are installed.  Hallelujah!  If you missed it, our kitchen island is a 12′ store counter that we found on the Marketplace.  We gave it a makeover once we brought it home.  And as soon as our kitchen was far enough along, it landed here in the house.  We were only going to have open shelving in this antique store counter.  But when I started bringing over some of our dishes to the house, we realized that we don’t want to lay on the floor to see the bottom shelf.  I have no problem doing that now, but can you imagine that in the years to come?  I mentioned this over on our social media stories and started getting a lot of messages.  So many people suggested pull-out drawers and it’s funny because I never even thought of that.  When our trim crew was here for the last time, we talked about it with them.  And, they wanted the job.  Well.. last week they delivered our custom pullout drawers and we couldn’t be happier.

Custom Pull-Out Drawers in the Kitchen Island

You can buy pull-out kitchen shelves/drawers already made.  We actually looked into them.  But, remember… this is an antique store counter.  It was made a LONG time ago by hand.  Actually it was made from some 2x4s.  So, each section was a little bit of a different size.  They were all off by about 1/4″ – 1/2″.  So we knew it would be a total nightmare to buy generic pull-out drawers.  When we talked to the crew that day, they said it would be fairly simple for them to make.  But we had to give them a few weeks because they were very busy.

They made two drawers for each section for a total of 6.  So each drawer is around 40″, give or take that 1/4″ – 1/2″.   We told them what we were going to keep in these drawers which included dinnerware, mixing bowls, pots and pans, etc.  So, they added slide out hardware that is heavy duty and could hold a lot of weight.  They actually are soft close which was an added bonus that we weren’t expecting.

I told them that I wanted the front part of the drawers lower so that we could see inside from behind the counter.  And, we didn’t care what type of wood they used because we were going to paint it anyway.  So I believe they used pine.  As you can see, each one of the drawers were made to fit this counter.

We ended up giving them a coat of primer and two coats of paint to finish them.  And then came the fun part of adding all of the rest of my dishes to the drawers.

Did you see this reel?

I shared the process of me organizing the drawers.  And, I actually received a few messages asking me if we actually use all of these dishes.

Yes… yes we do.  Some of this dinnerware was bought years ago.  Keep in mind that we cook every meal at home.  So, we grab whatever plate we feel like using at the time depending on the meal. And we both enjoy using real plates for our meals.

  • Love them! My middle son. bought his first house about a year ago, it was built in 1969. All of the bottom cabinets have these slide out drawers. I am quite jealous 😉. They make it easy to find everything.

  • I love this island also!! Beautiful and smart design!! If I ever get an island similar, I think I would have doors with plexiglass to put over the drawers...still have the open look but protect dishes from dust since i don't cook as often or use all the dishes regularly. (glass doors would be too heavy!)

  • Those drawers are the neatest things. My house was built long ago 1969 I wish I had big dawers that pull out instead of little cabinet doors That you have to get down and look back in. I love y'alls house, I like all of your stories and adventures. Did you ever get chickens?

  • Deb & Danelle I love your kitchen, esp the island. So smart! About three years ago my husband & I downsized our home. When I told the builder I wanted all my lower cabinets to be big drawers because I have back issues he refused until he ask my husband. Of course my husband knew he better agree if he wanted me to use that kitchen. The lower drawers are amazing!
