Found Items for the Chicken Coop

Did you see our shed we got for FREE?  My cousin heard us talking about wanting a chicken coop over on our social media stories and she sent me a text.  She said that they had a shed at their lake cottage they no longer wanted.  So, it was a matter of figuring out how to get it here on the property.  With the help of our good friends, we conquered that a few weekends ago.

This past weekend, the work begun on converting the little shed to a chicken coop.   And we found some great items for this project that happened to be free!

Found Items for the Chicken Coop

My parents were having a garage sale this past weekend.  They had a lot of items, many antiques, that they have stored for years.  The garage sale was almost over and my dad called to see if we wanted any of the remaining items.  So Deb and I ran to take a look.  We happened to find a lot of fun things that we may be able to use on the chicken coop and even in our garden area.

Screen Door

The screen door above will be used on the inside door to the coop.  We are going to add a little section to the front part of the coop with a door that we have in our storage unit.  And then this screen door will keep the chickens out of the front storage area.  It is where we will keep the food and everything else we will need out there.

Shutters

These shutters were on the free pile as well.  I have no clue if they will work around the front door, but I thought we would try to use them.  I will probably give all of these wood items a quick cleaning, a coat of paint, and a few coats of polyurethane to protect it from the weather.

Old Porch Columns and Railing

We grabbed several old porch columns to incorporate in our run somehow.  And the old painted porch railing will be added around the coop and garden area where we will plant some flowers, herbs, and maybe some boxwoods.  I have this vision to make this entire area look like a cottage garden.  We will see.

Weathervane and Hen Boxes

How ironic that they had a chicken weathervane.  That will, of course, go on top of the coop after a quick coat of spray paint.  And the hen boxes…  They will probably go outside of the coop for decor.  We are going to make hen boxes inside that we will be able to access outside.  It’s what we had at the old house and it makes it so much easier when gathering eggs.  You can see pictures of that here.

Old Ceiling Light Fixture

This old light fixture was also in the FREE pile.  I hope this works to add inside the hen house because they need a fancy light!  😆

We also have an old cupola in our stash that is totally falling apart, but Deb mentioned putting that all back together and adding it to the top of the hen house.

Stay tuned!  Make sure to subscribe to get our emails delivered to your inbox so you don’t miss a thing!  I usually only send out about three a week.
