Well…the moment I have been waiting for. Our pine flooring is painted.
Deb keeps saying, “You are so excited about this part of the new build, aren’t you?” Yes, Deb… Yes, I am. I have several posts on our pine flooring. I have an entire rundown of frequently asked questions that I shared regarding using pine boards as flooring. And, I believe I covered EVERYTHING. So be sure to read that if you have any questions. Or, before laying these floors yourself. You will want to know everything we have learned about doing this type of flooring over the last 10 plus years.
Before I go any farther. Shhhhhhhhh Don’t tell the painter I snuck in there and took these photos. 😂 I made sure they were dry and read the can to verify that I could gently walk on them.
Like I said in the FAQ post. People are serious about their wood. And they have VERY strong opinions about painting ANY type of wood – new or old. Whether it be a piece of furniture, kitchen cabinets, or flooring, I have heard from several.
“DO NOT PAINT THOSE FLOORS!”
Remember….. These aren’t your floors. You didn’t pay or them. You don’t have to live with them. Everyone is different. Some people love dark tile flooring, some people love carpet throughout their homes, and some people, like us, love wood floors. I have always wanted to paint our wood floors white but never had the courage. This is a decision that I didn’t take lightly. I decided early on that this is what I wanted. We then went back and forth with staining them. To be honest, the staining idea had me stressed out. When Deb said, “You have always wanted to do this, so let’s do it.” I felt more at ease once I went back to the thought of painting them white. Therefore, this was the right decision for us.
I have heard from so many of you who said that you or a family member have white wood floors and you LOVE them. One question that I have been asked a lot since early on was the type of paint we were going to use. Of course, we want this flooring to be very durable. After talking it over with the painter, we decided that a porch and floor enamel would work best. He chose one by Sherwin Williams. And, he had it matched to our trim which we had sprayed by the company who made it and is a plain white.
The painters ended up spraying the first coat and letting it dry for a day. They came back the second day to lightly sand and vacuum up any dust. And came back today and sprayed a second coat. We loved the idea of spraying it because it would get down into the cracks easier. So… there are now two coats total of paint on the floors.
The builder wants everyone to come in and finish: cabinets, countertops, trim, doors, light fixtures, etc. And then the painters will come back and ROLL one more coat on these floors. And let them cure for 7 days before moving anything heavy on them. Those 7 days will more or less feel like 7 weeks. But I think rolling that third coat on our pine flooring will make them even more beautiful than they are now.
I love them so much and cannot wait to get all of our warm colored area rugs in each room… and to see our large antique cabinets in place. The white painted pine flooring will simply showcase them all.
Can you tell I’m excited?
I am not sure if you have ever noticed our entryway coat closet. If you…

Key statement. They are your floors and you paid for them. They are beautiful. I will be honest in saying I don’t know that I would have had the guts to do that, doesn’t mean I don’t wish I didn’t have the guts!
