We are on a pallet kick.  ????  I have no clue why.  Maybe it’s because pallets are free and easy to get in our area.  We made the neutral American Flag from a pallet and then Deb used the leftover scraps to make a wooden tray that I currently have in our home decor.  She needs her workshop STAT.  ????   If you missed that news, we announced what our plans are for the new property and we named it The Woods and Ivy Cottage.  Which makes me so happy! Anyway, we were doing a little story tour with some friends over on Instagram and wanted to make another quick DIY project.  I came up with the idea to do pallet planter boxes because they are simple.  And I know they will look fabulous on our new porch.  I mean, who doesn’t need another planter box?  ????  They are perfect for every season.  I wanted them for my mums this year.  They will look adorable with Christmas trees, too!

How to Make a Planter Box from a Pallet

The first step is, of course, taking apart the pallet.  Deb has found that the easiest way to do that is to us a sawzall or reciprocating saw.  After trying to pull them all apart and taking one hour per pallet to do so, she talked to our nephews who use pallets all of the time.  They said, “if you use that saw, it takes two minutes.”  ????  She wasted HOURS in the past.

This is all pretty self explanatory but if you are like me, you need photos with the steps.

I wanted my pallet planters roughly 12″x 12″ square.

So for that size, you will need:

• 12 – pallet boards cut 12″
• 4 – 2×2 boards for the corners (cut to height size)
• Leftover boards for the bottom of the planter cut to size
• 4 – 2×4 boards for the little legs
• 4 – 2″ boards for the top ledge (you don’t need this but Deb thought it looked more finished)
• Stain – if you want yours stained

Put it all together!

Deb used wood glue and our air nailer with 1 1/4″ nails to put it all together.

She started by putting together the 12″ pallet boards together to make 3 squares which she then stacked on top of each other to for the planter box.

She used the 2×2 boards for the inside corners of the planters and attached them with air nails to each square she made above.

Then, she used the leftover scrap pallet wood for the bottom after she cut it to the size of our planter.  And attached them with the air nailer.

She added the little 2×4 legs on each corner of the bottom with screws.

And then added a trim board around the top because Deb is EXTRA!  ????

We ended up staining this pallet planter box because the pallets had a yellow undertone.  It’s the only ones we could find.  So you wouldn’t have to stain yours if you like the color of boards.

And there you have it.  It’s how we made the pallet planter boxes that we will have on The Woods and Ivy Cottage front porch SOON!  At least keep your fingers crossed that it’s SOON!  ????
