Chippy Porch Railing Plans

I want to share the weekend fun, before I start with my regular home post about the awesome chippy porch railing that I mentioned in my last post.

The weather was GORGEOUS this weekend.  The sun gave me lots of good energy and mojo.  Remember me telling you that we have 25 windows in this big brick colonial?   Since the sun was shining bright, it was a perfect time to wash all 25 windows, in other words, I wanted to get Winter’s dirt off the windows and Winter’s stink from the house.

While remodeling last Fall, we noticed there were several, gigantic large black flies INSIDE the house…. like 14,968 of those suckers.  We must have awaken them from hibernation with the pounding of our hammers and knocking out of walls.  I don’t know if they even hibernate, but every time we turned around there were 150 more.  Sick!

I thought I would share an observation from this weekend.

14,968 gigantic black flies produce lots of gigantic fly poop.    UGH!    I washed these same windows last Fall, but obviously, somewhere along the line, I missed some.   SO disgusting.   To summarize my weekend, all 25 windows are now cleaned from both our Winter’s dirt and all fly poop.  Yay!  It’s feels magnificent.

Last week I shared with you our entryway project from beginning to end.  We used a big chippy porch column to accomplish our BIG and GAUDY theme we’ve got going on.  I , also, posted a picture of an old porch railing that we are going to use inside the house.  Yes,  we are using old porch railings INSIDE the house.

The Old Porch Railing

Me:  (Perusing Craigslist):  “Wouldn’t it be so cool to use this old porch railing as our stairway banister on the landing?”  I followed that sentence with this.  ????

Deb:  ????

Me:  “We want something unusual.  We need something GAUDY.  Wouldn’t it be cool?” ????

Deb: ????

I knew she would see things my way.

The porch railing was in the back of our truck the next day ready to find its place in our home as our upstairs stairway banister.  We bought it from a man who said he had torn down an old house and while the screened porch walls were being removed, these railings were inside those walls.   Cool find, huh?

Directly at the top of our stairway project, that we focused on last week, is our huge stairway landing.  It sounds so bizarre to call this a “stairway landing” because it is truly more like a room.  It is roughly 10′ x 18′, which is bigger than the average bedroom.

Here is what we started with on this “room” after most of the trash was removed.

That’s the bathroom straight ahead in this picture.

And yes, these are our bathroom fixtures.  (It’s the only picture I could find, so you will see it two more times.)

I’m sure some of you are wondering why we would take that old stairway banister off since it may be original to the 1945 house, and some of you probably find it appalling.  The fact of the matter is, it’s not our style.   We want something that no one else has.  Remember, we aren’t the average run-of-the-mill stairway banister people.  This idea will go right along with that motto.

My ideas and check list for the stairway landing:

• Take off the stairway banister and replace it with the most awesome chippy porch railing
• Say buh bye to that ceiling light.  Move the light fixture OVER the steps and then install a big and gaudy chandie because we must have a chandie in every room.
• Install a sliding door on the outside of the bathroom which will is technically seen from the landing
• Paint the walls and trim my favorite shade of white – Sherwin Williams Pearly White
• Install our inexpensive pine wood boards as flooring just like our entryway.  See the flooring here if you missed that post.
• Style and decorate this room which is also known to Deb as “throwing a bunch of junk around.”

I can’t wait to update you on our progress, but I can’t leave you hanging with your eyes filled with really janky pictures.  Therefore, I will leave you with this – a window in one of my favorite rooms, sans Winter’s dirt and big gigantic black fly poop.
