Hi, friends!

Stairway Landing Renovation

We are right in the middle of the stairway landing renovation plans in which we will take an old chippy porch railing and turn it into a stairway banister.  Remember, we aren’t the average stairway banister people, so our goal here is out of the ordinary, also known as, big and gaudy.

Now, we have lived without a stairway banister for almost a year.  After finding the old porch railing on Craigslist from a nice gentleman who found them inside the walls of a screened porch, they sat along the side of our house for a year.

See….

Our house was all spiffed up on the outside with a new roof and windows, new landscaping, new garage doors and new lighting, and a freshly decorated porch.  These babies sat along the one side of our house for so long, that someone stopped by and said,

“Your house looks so good, but when are you going to clean up THAT side of the house?”

Listen sir, we have LOTS going on.   Do you know what we started with?

Yes, it is dangerous not to have a banister.  Yes, I have worried about Ivy falling overboard.    Also, I have worried about myself walking in my sleep and falling over the edge to my death.  Even though I’m not a sleepwalker, I am the type of person who mentally prepares herself for every possibly scenario.

Check list for stairway landing renovation

Let’s reflect on the list and what we have accomplished thus far:

  • Take off the stairway banister ☑️ and replace it with the most awesome chippy porch railing
  • Say buh bye to that ceiling light.  Move the light fixture OVER the steps and then install a big and gaudy chandie because we must have a chandie in every room.☑️
  • Install a sliding door on the outside of the bathroom which is technically seen from the landing.
  • Paint the walls and trim my favorite shade of white – Sherwin Williams Pearly White☑️
  • Install our inexpensive pine wood boards as flooring just like our entryway.  See the flooring here if you missed that post.
  • Style and decorate this room which is also known to Deb as “throwing a bunch of junk around.”

I just have to show you treasures we will be using to pull this space all together.  Bought at a garage sale, the sliding door to the bathroom is from the old Holthouse Building downtown Decatur that was torn down a few years back.  Isn’t it the coolest?

Oh my garsh, I love it.  Still attached is the original mail slot.

We will be installing a mirror on the inside of the door, and use the original glass on the outside to make an antique looking mirror using “looking glass” spray paint.  I will show you how to do that some time, too.  It’s very easy and makes a pretty cool antique looking mirror.  I believe Chip used this same technique last week on Fixer Upper.  And, if you don’t know who Chip is, I’m not sure we can be friends.

Big, Giant Chandelier

So, the walls are now painted my favorite shade of white, and the big and gaudy chandie is hung.

Isn’t THAT the coolest thing ever?  It’s HUGE!  The ceiling medallion alone is 18″ wide.

Out of the 16 chandies we have, it is truly my all time fave.  Oh, don’t act shocked we have 16, I told you we must have one in every room.  Ha!

There is a short story about this chandie, too, because there is always a story.

I bought this baby on a Facebook garage sale site listed for $50.  WHAT?   Who sells an antique chandelier for $50?

The nice lady told me that this beauty was the original entryway light in her aunt’s old Victorian home.  She remembers seeing it every day after school, hanging from the second story of the open stairway, above the entryway table which was always decorated with fresh flowers from her gardens.  Can you just picture it?

And there you have it.  Tomorrow will be flooring and the installation of the porch railing and the problems we had doing so.

Thanks so much for stopping by.  I would love to hear from you about this stairway landing renovation by commenting on this post and if you haven’t yet checked us out on Facebook and Instagram, you must.

BUH BYE, NOW – Said in a loud, high-pitched old lady’s voice, because how else could you say BUH BYE NOW?
