Our staircase wall molding project was starting this past spring. Deb made up her own design combining a few ideas that I had in mind and then I was supposed to paint it. Well, that never happened. Sooooooo, our painter stopped by to chat about our floors having to be re-painted, more on that later… And, we asked him to finished the staircase wall. And, here we are. It turned out so good. I can say this because I had nothing to do with this project.  Ha! 

Note:  The paint he used was the same as our trim color which is a basic white right off of the shelves, with no color added, in a semi-gloss.

Staircase Wall Molding

This project is part of our series From Flat to That. We are adding lots of texture to our flat walls (drywall) to make them way more interesting. You wouldn’t even believe what it has done. I hung wallpaper in the dining room, we added a shiplap wall in the living room, shiplap around the fireplace in the kitchen, panels on the lower part of the bathroom walls, bead board wallpaper in the kitchen and laundry room, brick on our fireplace wall in the dining room, and this project was finished most recently.

One of the ideas I had for this wall, I’m pretty sure, was a screenshot from the Bridgerton home.  Deb created this staircase wall molding look from that screenshot along with another one that I found on Pinterest.

What she used to create this look:

She used a 1×4 board for the top and the wider boards that were hung vertically to create the panels.  The strips of wood hung vertically between the panels are actually sanded plywood sheets that she cut down. She then set this look over the edge by adding a decorative piece of trim all along the inside of each panel to dress it up a bit. We talked about adding a top trim piece like we did in the bathroom, but decided against it.  Because, as you can see, I wanted to be able to hang pictures and mirrors on the walls at the correct level. With a trim piece at the top, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.

Deb continued the same panels that are going up the staircase into the entryway. I ended up adding some wooden pegs to the one section. I may add a few more in the future, but I’m not sure. The chalkboard on the ledge was found for $1 at a flea market this past summer. Have I told you how much I miss flea markets and yard sales. Gahhhh! They are so fun in our area.  I think there is one coming up on New Year’s Day that we may go to. If we do, I will for sure share. So stay tuned for that.

This entryway is going to get a makeover. Don’t worry, it won’t be affecting anything Deb did with the walls here except a little sliver to the right of the COATS door.  That little section between the closet and the stairway was NOT supposed to be there. The contractors built it that way and we didn’t catch it. That should be done soon. And, once that is done, Deb will continue this same molding all around the rest of the entryway.
