Did you see that we added some steps to the entrance of our vegetable garden?  We used some old concrete that we got last year from a neighbor.  It creates the base for a perfect “grand entrance” that we have in mind to our garden.  I know some of you are probably thinking..what in the world?  Ha!  But, Deb and I normally do things a little on the EXTRA side.  And, this is definitely EXTRA.  We have a vision in our heads and keep adding to it.  So when we started seeing the vision of the front steps, we decided we wanted back steps as well.  Yesterday we completed the back steps in the garden and I couldn’t wait to share it with you.

The Back Steps in the Garden

The back steps are what we call the side that is toward the chicken coop.  We decided that we needed a gate on that side of the picket fence because that is where the water spigot is located.  So rather than walking all the way around from the front entrance, we wanted a second entrance there.  When deb started leveling out the land for our vegetable garden, she had to bring in some dirt.  So it was a lot higher there.  So adding steps on that side as well made perfect sense.

We used the same concrete pieces that we had for the front of the garden.  And, to be honest, I wanted to give up when we were doing this part.  It was SO HOT.  Deb uses the skid loader as I direct traffic and tell her where to place the pieces.  I was not only boiling in the direct sun, but the heat coming off of that skid loader had me going mad.  And, I’m not kidding.

We moved that top piece of concrete 11 times…. taking if off and on, off and on.  The last time that she placed it, it was finally level.  We started doing one more thing before calling it a night, and I gave up.  I had sweat running down my back, my shirt was soaking wet, gnats were buzzing around my face… I had mud all over the bottom of my shoes, and stones were sticking to the mud.  So, I was at my limit.

I had a bad attitude about everything and thought it looked dumb anyway.  Ha!  To the shower I went and basically sat on the porch swing staring into space the rest of the night.  When I visited the back steps in the garden the next day, they looked nice to me.  I guess I wasn’t in the right state of mind the night before.

Adding the extras….

We have a bunch of smaller pieces of concrete that were once curb stones that we may add along the outside of the fence.  It will act as a border and also hold the dirt in.  The plan is to add some hydrangeas and boxwoods along the outside of the fence to dress it up a bit and make it look like an English cottage garden.  It will also match the rest of our landscaping on our property. Oh.. and I want to incorporate some herbs along the outside as well.

We did add our little boy made form concrete who we call “Will”.  I bought him YEARS ago.. around the year 2,000.  He originally held a gazing ball but I like to have him hold different things now.  The citronella plant looks cute beside him.  And in the fall, I like to have him holding a pumpkin.

We have a lot more to do in this space so keep watching social media stories as I share in the moment there.  Otherwise, I always share here as well a day later or so.

Also, we did get the second columns up on the front entrance and they look smashing, if I do say so myself.  We are going to add some boards across the top to make it look almost like our pergola swing. And then I have some fun things planned to dress it up even more.  I cannot wait for that part.  I will be sharing the front columns soon.

Thanks for stopping by today.  I really appreciate all of you!
