The Outside of the Chicken Coop is DONE

This project feels like it has drug on and on and on. I can’t even believe that I typed those words. The outside of the chicken coop is done! And, while we have 1-2 more smaller things to do, I’m calling it. Just because I want to. Ha! And because those smaller things will take a few minutes. It got dark and then rained when we were trying to finish them. So probably by the time you are reading this post, the chicken coop will, in fact, be done. I wanted to share what it looks like now, but please look at the previous posts about it. Because you will get a good feel for the entire project.
See what it looked like when we first got it. I talked about where we got it, etc, in that post. I updated you on it when we got a little work done and an updated checklist. We collected a bunch of found items that we used on the coop. And, then we started the attached run this spring. This is a project that we wanted done ASAP. While it FELT like it took forever, it really didn’t.
The Outside of the Chicken Coop is DONE
The day we left for our Alaska trip, we added a tarp to the top of the run. Because we didn’t want something to climb the top of the fence and get to the chickens. We truly thought we would be able to get back from the trip and start this project immediately. But we both came back with Covid. A week later or so we felt better and were all ready to start this project, it rained and rained and rained. So it was nothing but mud out there because we don’t have our grass planted yet, which will happen this fall. Finally, the rain stopped and the ground dried up and we had time to finish this.
We decided to add a metal roof to the top of the run because we thought it would be easier. The roof line of the little coop and the fence around the run sort of limited us to doing anything different that was quick. Because we have a lot more things on our to-do list to accomplish this summer.
A few little extras…
Once we got everything done, we decided to decorate the outside. I’m sure you didn’t expect anything else. From the found items, we added a pair of shutters on the outside of the chicken coop door and the weather vane on top. We ended up adding these lights to each side of the door. They are motion activated which is great for out here. The black urns are ones that we had on the porch at the rental. And do you remember the huge concrete pieces that we incorporated into the front and back entryway of the garden area this year? Well, this is one of the pieces from that haul.
After we got the run built, I knew that we had to spruce up the front. So I found these black lights that come on from dusk to dawn, which I love. They are inexpensive but they do the trick. See the picture below that I took in the dark while they were on. We may add a third one for the left side of the run and spread the other two out evenly. I think they look so cute here. And, then we added a wooden piece over the door that I found at a flea market, I think, just to add interest.
We have just a few things to do in the inside of the coop yet, which includes finishing the walls to the right and left of the door inside. We want to add shelves for storage. But, we have to wait until the electrician gets the power run to this before that can happen. But, as of now, this is it!
I love how this little coop turned out. And, I think it’s a direct reflection of us with the woods and whites tones! What do you think?

What do y’all use in the chicken run to keep it dry and how often do you change it?
With the roof over it, it stays pretty dry. Unless we get a massive amount of rain and then it runs in from the door. We will be taking care of that. I usually buy a few bags of the wood chip shavings at Rural King or Tractor Supply and throw it down to keep their feet dry. And, I don't change it. It composts and becomes dirt. I will add more over it when I want it to look fresh. As far as the inside, I use the same bedding and I clean it out by scooping their poo and adding fresh over the top. They are outside so much in the summer that there isn't much of it.
