The Squatter's Camp

The Squatter’s Camp Plans and Material List

If you missed what and where the Squatter’s camp is, please read this post.  It will explain everything.  I promised that I would share their plans for this little area they are now calling a “resort.”  ????

The Squatter’s Camp Plans

As you read in the previous post, the boys, Jake and Andy, text us and said they had an idea for a permanent structure for the Squatter’s Camp resort.  They brought over an actual stack of papers and gave us a presentation… along with a contract.  ????    They truly took their presentation very serious with a cover sheet and all.

They explained that they found an inspiration picture on Pinterest.   And that this structure will be made of wood.  They showed us a list of measurements and a few ideas they had.  This little structure would have window openings and a door.   ????????????

The presentation contained a contract that was already signed by their parents.  They just needed our signatures… which we, of course, signed it.

Their Gathered Materials

The boys informed me that their budget is $0.  ????

Their parents bought them 4 – 4×4 posts for the outside supports, screws, and 2 bags of concrete, but they are going to find the rest of the materials themselves.  They explained to us that they found some brick in another woods here on the land.  We knew that the brick was ours that we were storing back there until we wanted it for a project.  We didn’t have the heart to tell them that they couldn’t have them for the Squatter’s Camp when we saw they carried 88 bricks in their backpack out of the woods.  And, then stacked them here for their project.  (They said they could only carry 5 bricks at a time.)  ????

We explained that we do have a project for the rest of the brick (our pergola porch swing area) and that we would donate several 12 x 12 stepping stones for the floor of their structure.  So the floor should be covered.

They found some old boards in grandpa’s garage that they are using for the framing of the walls.  And, also got their hands on some free old barn siding from a person at their church who is tearing down their barn.  They grabbed that last week.  AND…. Jake told us that he is going to make shutters out of pallet wood for all of the windows so that they can pull them shut.  And that he has a lot of old hinges.

Deb told him that we have a door in storage that he could have for this Squatter’s Camp area, too.

Construction is full underway here at the Squatter’s Camp.    Their dad helped them with the framing this week and I cannot wait to show you the progress.  Stay tuned.

  • I love EVERYTHING about this!! I would have done (did do!) the same kind of thing when I was 11-12. When I was 8-9, I would "rake" floor plans for imaginary homes, with pine needle walls delineating rooms! I was a kid in the 70's and we made up our own fun. It's great to see that some kids are still trapesing through the woods, making their own adventures! Kuddos to them and I can't wait to read more about their "resort's" progress! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

  • Deb + Danielle! Best grandmas! The boys have inherited your skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Anxiously awaiting updates!

  • So exciting‼️????????‼️ Wish more kids were so ambitious. However, it helps to have encouraging adults such as the kids parents, you and Deb, teachers etc. I think of all the skills they are learning‼️‼️AMAZING JOB AND WELL DONE‼️????????????

  • How fun! Please be sure to take photos of them and their project so they can look back one day. What are these ages of these 2 lads. I loved all the paper plans. So sweet! Good luck to them!

  • Oh my stars!! What a sweet idea!! They’re so cute too!! I bet y’all just love seeing them gather materials and being industrial to have a place to visit in the woods!! So sweet!! ????????????????????

  • This has got to be the most rad thing ever! You two must be the coolest Aunts ever as well! These boys will have one of the best experiences of their lives and will learn so much about life during this project. I was dying over “The boys informed me that their budget is $0” ???????????? I can’t wait to watch the progress. Love you guys and miss you do much since I’m off Instagram.
