The Squatter's Camp

The Squatter’s Camp Renovation

For those of you who are not on social media, you are probably thinking to yourself… what in the actual hell is Squatter’s Camp.  ????   I shared this over on Instagram and even have a highlight if you want to see more.  But… I needed to document this project here.  Because it is SO FUN!  And I know you guys will LOVE this.  But first of all…..

What is the Squatter’s Camp?

Deb’s parents own roughly 200 acres all around this property.  They have owned it FOREVER. Most of it is farm ground, but there are several wooded areas, also.   Deb’s sister and her family built a house several years ago on the side of our woods with a creek and a field between us.  Their kids, two boys and two girls, who range from ages 12 – 7, have had free rein over all of the land pretty much their entire lives.   The boys LOVED spending time outdoors and LOVED exploring in the woods.

A few years back, Deb and I got the oldest one a tent for Christmas.  He set it all up and made himself a campsite with a campfire ring, seating, etc.  And keeps it picked up from leaves, sticks, etc.  He and his brother made a walking bridge over the creek for easier access and recently added a mailbox so we could exchange notes.  ????   They actually designed and made this mailbox all by themselves.

Anyway….

Squatter’s Camp got its name from him.  He said he was here first and should have some type of rights to this area.  ????  We, of course, think it’s hilarious and go along with this idea.

The Squatter’s Camp Renovation

The two boys are 12 and 11 and they love being outside.  They can stay pretty busy and can find lots and lots to do.  A few days ago, Deb and I received a text.  It said that they have an idea for the Squatter’s Camp area but needed our approval first.  We were thinking they wanted to add lights… plants….  ???  We had absolutely no clue what they would want to do, but we were open to listen.

They showed up to our cottage with a plan to renovate the Squatter’s Camp.

Are you as excited about this as I am?    ????    Stay tuned for the next post on the Squatter’s Camp Renovation, which will include their plans!  And, I will be sharing this project from start to finish.

  • This is so awesome! In the world we live in these days it’s so nice to know kids that love being outdoors using their imaginations. Kudos to you two gals for encouraging and embracing it. I cannot wait to hear the rest of this story. Hugs to all.

  • This is so great!! Love everything about this and appreciate you guys sharing this adventure with us.

  • I just love how you rope us into one thing right after another! I always wonder what the next thing to anticipate is going to be. I fear you're going to run out! I started following just as you moved to the rental. You got that done then it was your sitting areas/fire pit, then camper redo, then cottage and your little projects. Now the squatters camp. My husband is so sick of hearing, "Deb and Danelle did this, Deb an Danelle says to do this or use this, or I want it to look like Deb and Danelle's!" When I text my daughter something about you all I just say D&D or go look at D&D and she knows immediately who I'm talking about.

  • I love the adventures you bring to all of us so excited to see what nephews and niece Squatters Plan is. ????????‍????????????‍????????????‍???? Your place is gorgeous and the camp ???? is a bonus. The memories these kids make will carry on throughout the lifetime of the family name. It’s nice to see no electronics in their hands. I’m 58 and lived in Chicago my Nana had a huge Weeping Willow tree in the yard and the brothers made a tree house which was neat. They collected odd stuff through the allies to use on the tree house such as siding, windows, wood and roofing. Like I wrote it was neat. Until the day my psycho mommy dearest having a psycho rage took away the ???? so we couldn’t get down. The boys had a rope in case of an emergency ???? but I couldn’t get down. I was scared and either way it was me in trouble not them. I wasn’t suppose to be in the tree house with the boys. So I stayed up there for hours until someone brought over a ladder after the psycho bitch wasn’t screaming ????. I got down finally. Just to finish she beat me to hell. I ran away after never went back. I won my life.

  • One more EXCITING project! How FUN! Wish all the kiddos in the world had this kind of space to create, explore, & be adventurous!
