The Steps to Our Vegetable Garden

Oh my gosh, have we been working hard.  You know that we are running around like mad women trying to get our garden finished.  Well, I can safely say that as of this afternoon, everything will finally be planted.  Yay!  We got a few of our raised beds in this space last week and finished filling all but one yesterday.  We have one more to put together and fill today and plant the last two plants that I have bought for it.  Our picket fence went up around the garden area last week, as well.  Yesterday, we got one more thing done that I absolutely couldn’t wait for.  The steps to our vegetable garden were placed and I just had to share them.

Our Steps to Our Garden

Do you remember when our neighbor text Deb and said they were taking out a sidewalk.  They wondered if we wanted the concrete from the sidewalk for anything here on the property.  I am sure a lot of people would have said NO…  But Deb and I knew we could find a use for it.  So basically, piece by piece, she drove the skid loader down and slowly drove them back. They have been stacked up outside the woods for the perfect project. Large old concrete pieces work great for steps. So as soon as we started our garden project, we knew we wanted to use them as steps up into our garden.

We also used one as a pad into our chicken coop.  You can see that here.

We will be making another entrance to our vegetable garden on the chicken coop side so that we don’t have to walk all the way around to the front.  It will make it easier for watering, etc.  That side will also have a few steps since we had to build up the garden on that side as the land was lower there… which will take 2-3 more pieces.

Do you remember the concrete sidewalk we put in around the little garage?  We picked up every single piece by hand.  And the large step up into the garage was so big that we rolled it on PVC pipe and used a pry bar to move it into place.  Ha!  That is how we did all of our work before the skid loader.  Thank goodness for that!

What’s left to complete this area?

We have another garden box to put together and plant.  This will be done today.

The gate on the chicken coop side will need to be addressed before adding the steps to that side.

The front entrance to the vegetable garden is going to get two more columns and some type of top.  We are thinking it will be somewhat similar to our pergola porch swing.  But we are making this all up as we go, so no guarantees.

Landscaping around the fence and in front of the chicken coop will give this area an English cottage garden feel.

The steps need power washed because of the  different colors, which I think are a little distracting.

I would LOVE to add a water feature to this area.  Remember the fountain that we got from the same neighbor?  I was talking to Deb about moving that to the garden area, but we will see.  I think it would add so much.

A seating area is a must.  We have a double Adirondack chair out there now but we want to make it more permanant.

There will be a lane that goes all the way back from the main driveway for easy access with the skid loader, our Polaris, and other vehicles.

And I have a few things in mind to make this a GRAND entrance to our garden.  Stay tuned for that. I’m so excited to get to that part of the project.  We are working on all of this the rest of the week as the weather is supposed to be good and not rain.  So it’s coming sooner rather than later.

If you are on social media, stay tuned to stories for this project in the moment.  Otherwise, I always share here as well.  Thanks for following along in our journey of making this property one of a kind and someplace we love to hang out at.

  • You both are incredible. Your vision for projects, your patience, kindness and unbelievable calmness and get it done attitude is applauded. Well well done ladies.

  • Great job! All your hard work is paying off and I can't wait to see the finished product!!

  • FANTASTIC … luv the picket fence AND those steps … LOOKIN” GOOD !! TKS for sharing.

  • You guys work so hard. I was looking at your shoes and it made me recall growing up on our farm in Northwest Missouri...we always had barn shoes and garden shoes...that sat out on the back porch where they had to be left because they were so soiled and donned again when we went out to do chores. Everything you're doing is so fun and interesting. Just can't wait for the next installment.

    • I have shoes like that, but they are still only slip on sandals that lay outside the door. I'll catch onto outdoor boots one of these days!

  • It's dreamy! Great elements which are creating a functional but oh so pleasing garden which I have no doubt will produce a ton of great veg. It's an exceptional growing year. My garden is going nuts! Beautiful job, ladies.

    • I love hearing that other people's gardens are doing well. I am hoping ours will really take off soon after getting a late start.
