The Story Behind our Pieces: Bead Board Wall Cabinet

I have been sharing the story behind our pieces of furniture, chandeliers, and lots of other things over the last couple of weeks.  Each of our pieces have a story that I would love to share.  I have shared our  antique wardrobe, the linen cabinet, an antique chandelier, and our medicine cabinet.

We have been working really hard at getting this cottage organized.  I remembered this little cabinet we had in the storage unit that I was missing.  So, I decided to grab it and find a place for it here in the cottage.

The pieces was this little bead board wall cabinet.

The Story Behind our Pieces: Bead Board Wall Cabinet

My favorite look for our kitchen is to have random upper cabinets.  I think in my mind I know that I can change them to give the kitchen a completely different look… kind of a non-commitment type of thing.   We hung our spice cabinet which I will share more about that later.  And we needed another upper cabinet to hold cooking oils, vinegars, etc.   We like having them right at our fingertips, just as we do our spices while cooking.

Some of you may remember this cute little bead board wall cabinet from the old  house.  But lots of you probably don’t know exactly where we found it.  While I was designing the kitchen in the old house, I kept my eyes peeled for random things to use as upper kitchen cabinets.  I constantly checked the Facebook Marketplace and garage sale sites.

Finding this piece.

This little cabinet, with a curved top opening and a shelf popped up on one of the garage sale sites I follow.  The guy said that it was actually his grandfather’s old grandfather clock.  His grandfather stored it in the barn.  And the bottom of the clock sat on the wet floor for YEARS.  It all fell apart except the top part.  He grabbed it while they were cleaning out the barn and kept it in his attic FOREVER.  He decided it was time to get rid of it.

Remember… the piece was sitting in a barn.  So, it had been chewed on by mice and rats.  Not even kidding.  BUT, the size was exactly perfect for what I wanted it for.  It also didn’t have a door.  AND….. it was $5.  There was no way I could pass that up.

Revamping the piece.

Of course, I brought it home and gave it a hefty cleaning.  Deb had a bunch of old bead board that someone gave her and decided to make a little door for it.  She added a cute wooden applique to give it a little more character and an old knob.

We hung it in our old kitchen for years and used it as an upper cabinet and it is now here in the cottage doing the same thing.  I love it so much and was so happy I found it in storage.

What do you think of my little $5 cabinet?

  • That is a great story Danelle! I adore this little cabinet! That’s one thing I don’t like about living in the Boise area. We’re so isolated that we don’t get many cool items like this show up on Marketplace, although if I had your eyes, I’d probably see that there are a lot more than what I think! ????

  • Love it what a story! The way u take a piece and do your magic. So talented I’m amazed ever time I see what you have done! Plus the energy u have do u guys sleep and moving that furniture and stove.
    Woowee u all rock!

  • I absolutely love this, and hearing the story behind it makes it all the more interesting!! I, too, love to fill my home with pieces that carry a story along with them, so I really enjoy when you share the background of all your amazing pieces!!

  • I love your stories about items you're using in your home with a history and how you are repurposing them for your home. It has definitely made me look at things differently and figure out how I can utilize things and make them meaningful and special. Thank you for all your fabulous ideas.

  • I just love watching you and Ded. Y'all are so talented. Can't wait to see the Cottage finished. It's beautiful the way y'all have it decorated. Y'all are so awesome. Ivy is adorable. Can't wait to see what you and Deb do with the Big House y'all are going to build. Love love watching you and Deb and Ivy on stories.

  • The thought process and creativity y’all put in your finds become beautiful treasures. I love this! I am one who doesn’t have that kind of vision and appreciate you sharing! Have a wonderful week!
