The Story Behind our Pieces: Dining Room Chandelier

Do you remember where this chandelier hung in the House on Winchester?  It was hanging above the stairway.  It happens to be my favorite antique chandelier that we have, therefore, it came with us when we sold the house.   We wrote it in the sales agreement that we would take this chandelier with us, but we left it for the new owners to use because we didn’t have room for it in the rental.  Once we started working on the cottage, we made plans to grab this chandelier from the old house.

Now is the perfect time to tell you the story behind this dining room chandelier.

The Story Behind the Pieces: Dining Room Chandelier

My Antique Chandelier Search

When we were renovating the old house, I was collecting antique chandeliers.  I wanted no new lighting.  I regularly searched eBay and picked up several from there.  Most of the ones we got needed rewired which is no big deal.  We had a re-wiring party one night over cocktails.  ????

I, also, regularly searched the Facebook Marketplace for antique chandeliers.  They popped up quite frequently and when I found them for around $100 or under, I would snatch them up.  I had just enough to hang in every room.  In fact, our master bedroom had 3 of them.  Anyway… when I was looking for the perfect chandelier for the stairway, this one popped up on the Marketplace.  It was listed in a town about an hour away from us for $75.  I, of course, said I was interested.  But, there was one person ahead of me.  And, I knew it would never get to me because $75 was a fantastic price.

The Transaction and The History

I received a message that the girl ahead of me passed on this gorgeous antique chandelier because it was a 45 minute drive for her.  Money was very tight during this renovation.  So, I asked her if she would take $60 for it….  because I was going to drive over an hour to pick it up.  She agreed.

When I arrived, she told me the history.  She said that her grandmother lived in an old victorian house.  This was the chandelier from the entryway which was open to the upstairs.  So basically it hung down through both stories.  She said she had a round table underneath this chandelier that had fresh flowers on it at all times.  Every time this girl would visit, she would look up at that chandelier and think it was so pretty.

Her grandmother had it rewired once and took really great care of it.  Here is where my memory fades.  I don’t know if the house was taken down, remodeled by new owners, or even how this girl got it.  But, she said she loved it but didn’t have anyplace to hang it.  And she wanted someone to have it who would enjoy it.

The moral of the story is… this is STILL my favorite antique chandelier out of all of them that we have.  The large ceiling plate and the pretty gold color with all of the little glass beads make it one of a kind in my eyes.  AND… if you want a great deal on something, you may need to drive an hour to pick it up.
