The yard sales were yard saling, let me tell you. A few weekends ago, my sister came home from North Carolina, as she always does, to shop the 127 Yard Sales. I shared my haul of antique and vintage items a few days back. The weekend after the 127 Yard Sales were the Lincoln Highway Yard Sales. I got a text on Friday night asking if I wanted to go with my dad the next morning. We had a blast and found several items. Here are my antique and vintage finds from the Lincolns Highway Yard Sales.
The Lincoln Highway Yard Sales is an annual event that takes place along the Lincoln Highway, which was one of the first transcontinental highways for automobiles in the United States. Here’s a brief history of the event taken from a quick google search.
The concept of yard sales along the Lincoln Highway began as a way to promote tourism along this historic route. The idea was to attract visitors to the small towns and communities along the highway, encouraging them to explore local shops, diners, and attractions. It typically involves residents and businesses along the highway setting up yard sales, flea markets, and other types of sales to attract travelers.
The Lincoln Highway runs from Times Square in New York City to Lincoln Park in San Francisco. The yard sale event is most popular in states like Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Iowa, where the tradition has taken a strong hold. And it typically takes place in the summer, often in early August
I found several things to add to my collections that I already had during these yard sales. And, if you are a collector, you understand how fun that is. Here is what I found:
I added 2 canes to my newest collection. They were $1-$2. I picked up one that was marked $5 and put it back down. The owner said quite loudly, “$2.” Ha! You could tell that everyone was tired of sitting there as this was the last day. So, I took it off of her hands. I love how they look here in this old barrel in the kitchen.
The very last yard sale we stopped at was this celluloid hand mirror marked $5. He took $4. It went right in my collections here in the laundry room cabinet. I’m not sure how many I have now, but there are quite a few in here.
We happened upon a yard sale that had a TONNNN of vintage items, including two antique chalkboards. I have a smaller collection of them and I find them so interesting. Who used them prior? I’m assuming they were little kids in school, which reminds me of Little House on the Prairie. Ha. I propped them up behind the other ones I have here in the laundry room.
Yes, I have a collection of chamber pots. I know some people think they are so disgusting, but I happen to love them. They have made it through some hard times. Ha! This one is in great shape and has an ironstone marking on the bottom. I displayed my square soaps inside of it.
This is another collection that I probably have never shown. These were all either given to me or I found for $1-2. I think they are pretty cool and had originally had them in a crock but pulled them out to display on a wooden tray for interest.
One of these wooden handled brushes was marked a lint brush and the other was a shoe brush. Each were marked higher than $2 but the people were dealing this past weekend. I added them to this crock.
I cannot remember if this old scale was $8 or $10. Either way, it is cute and such a great deal. The weights are 8oz and 1lb. It’s rusty and looks great here on this little table. This would look adorable tucked in a cabinet with ironstone displayed on it, too.
I honestly think this was the deal of the day. You know that I love to take old frames and add seasonal prints. All of these frames were marked $5 each. They are in rough shape, but they are still nice. I will clean them all up and then maybe add a coat of poly to them to spruce them up. I have an idea of where I want to hand the “instant relatives” so keep watching for those.
This mirror is HUGE and heavy and seems like it may have come off of a buffet maybe. I have an idea of where I want this. It needs cleaned up a bit before I do that. I love the color and the details on this and he made me a great deal.
The reason for the ??? is because I’m not sure about the price of each of them. I believe all of this was $15 but I can’t remember. These belonged to the same guys who had the above mirror and he was basically throwing things in a pile telling me to take them. Ha! I am going to get these items made over and display them somewhere. We have two bedrooms upstairs that are waiting for decor.
Note: Deb already sanded and put back together the croquet set and the carrier for me. I am going to stain and poly it today, so if you are on social media, stay tuned.
