Antique Door on our Stairway Landing Linen Closet

Deb would be rolling her eyes if she knew I was writing this post. ???? As, this project is FAR from being done. She doesn’t read my blog and is never on social media.  So she will never know. ????   But, I couldn’t wait to show you guys.  The stairway landing in our home is huge!  It’s bigger than most bedrooms.  There are two closet doors in particular which are a bit boring for yours truly.  One of those doors belongs to the stairway landing linen closet and the other is Ivy’s bedroom, which happens to hold our paint clothes.  ????

We wanted to find antique doors to replace the original boring doors.  I mentioned to a few people that I would love to find antique doors with glass on the top like my pantry door.  So, I would need two matching doors, with glass on top, and only 24″ wide.  Soooooo… not to specific.  ????

One of my friends called and said she thought she saw some old doors with glass on the top that appeared to be 24″ wide.  AND….. they were being thrown away.  An old building which was previously a factory, was being remodeled so the “trash” inside needed to go.  Um…………..   Over here…..???????? I will take them.

You probably already know where this story is leading.  We stopped everything we were doing and ran.  ????????‍♀️????????‍♀️  We carried down 150 doors.  (OK…maybe 13)  Because we couldn’t let them all go to waste.  The kicker was that we had to walk up and down 3 flights of steps because they were all on the third floor.  The first set of stairs had 22 steps, the second set had 21, and the third set had 13 steps.  We know this to be true because we counted them each time we traveled that route.  Trust me, by the 13th trip, the last several flights were pure torture.  That was 728 steps to be exact.

But the 728 steps were worth it.  Deb started working on the stairway landing linen closet door switcheroo yesterday.  Ivy’s bedroom will be started and hopefully completed tomorrow so I will show the entire area in the next couple of days.  But, I was too excited to wait to show you the first antique door installed.

I still have my work to do.  She ended up having to switch the way the door opened.  She moved the hinges to the opposite side because they were mirror image doors.  So I have to fill cracks and holes and re-paint the entire door jamb.

I will also need to thoroughly clean the actual wood itself.  I am also debating whether I should clean up the brass plates?  They both have one where a handle would be and one as a kick plate at the bottom.

I’m unsure what I’m going to do with the glass top.  We may cut a mirror and install them behind the leaded glass as not to ruin the original window.  That will cause a great reflection of the room and also hide what’s behind the doors.

I swear…there is NOTHING like the olden days, huh.  Can you imagine this door being in an old factory?  I just wish I could go back to see what the entire structure looked like originally.  ❤

Thanks so much for stopping by.  I sound like a broken record when I say this, but I mean it from deep in my heart.  There are plenty of blogs out there.  There are plenty of things your could be doing.  And just knowing you take the time to read mine, makes my heart happy!

What do you think?  I think I’m in love!  (Isn’t that a song? ????)  Let me know in the comments or chat with me over on Facebook and Instagram.

Buh bye…. for now!!!!

  • LOVE the door!!! I would leave the brass as is. Who wants shiny! ????. Kudos to Deb!! You all rock!! ????

  • Looks gorg!! I'm so jealous! I have been looking for a pair of 24" doors for the husband's closet in our master. I want old doors. So far I've come close, but have not found anything that didn't have to be cut down too much on the top or bottom.
Lucky you, to have hit the gorgeous door jackpot! I have an easy (HA! Maybe..) idea for privacy for the window- - You could instal frosted window film, cut to fit, on the inside (backside) of the door. Is it beveled on the inside too? It may not work with a bevel, but I hung some on my bathroom window in our CA house, and it stayed for over a decade, until we sold it and moved to TN. Just a thought...

    • First off, thank you. Second off I'm jealous you live in Tennessee. ???? And thirdly, we thought about that film stuff, but I may want a mirror. ???? Glad to know that film works.

  • Wow, so great, worth the steps for sure. Since you asked, I think you should clean the brass which will be super easy with ketchup.
Would you rent out Deb, please, with sugar on top?

    • Oh, girlfriend, go downstairs right now, get some ketchup and some brass or copper and paint it on. I use a silicon brush that I have for barbque. You will be amazed! Easy, peasy.

  • As always you girls amaze me. You have the vision, the connections, the drive and the ability. I wish I had one of those components. Looks great.

  • Gah!!! I love it! There is nothing like old doors and they are pretty hard to find...at least ones that are the right dimensions! Love your blog, love your house, love your Instagram...love you guys!

    • Thank you so much!!! They are very hard to find. Thanks for following along with our shenanigans. ????

  • Love you on Instagram and also I am now following you on the blog. You are hysterical and so entertaining. I really look forward to seeing all your "finds" and how you incorporate them into your beautiful home. I particularly enjoy the DIY information. Deb is a gem and a perfect foil for you. I could do with a Deb around here (widowed for ten years). Keep up the fantastic communications! Maureen

    • Awwww... thank you so much for the kind words. I really appreciate anyone who wants to tag along in our lives. ????

  • I love this story, and these doors!! What a find!! ???????? Absolutely perfect fit in your gorgeous home!

  • Love the doors, the whole house!. You two are amazing. I think the cleaned up brass would add some sparkle and hey with time it will get dull again if you’re not a fanatic about polishing it. ????And....anyone out there looking for a mother lode of doors head to Wichita, KS and check out Old Town Architectural Salvage, believe they have a website. And no, I’m not getting paid to mention them just trying to be helpful, I’ve never seen so many old doors in my life. All prices, some reasonable and some not. Keep up the inspiring work Danelle!

    • Thank you so much!!!! We have a shop like that in a nearby town that contains all salvaged pieces from old homes. It's so fun to walk through it.

  • House in Winchester is my only blog. I won’t miss one “episode “. Lol. I always loved your house and am so glad you girls are restoring it. You both are amazing. Ivy is sooo lucky to have that awsome bedroom coming. Any ideas for a bedroom for one spoiled cat. All he has is a cardboard box with a pillow and a towel, one step above an ally cat! Lol. As always looking forward to the next episode????

    • hahahahah awwww... thank you so much for following. That makes my day. And I'm sure your little kitty is happy with a cardboard box. They seem to only require a little love.
