I told you that we bought a little garage.  The little garage is going to be for our Polaris and for lawn equipment once the house is built.  Since we will be living in The Woods and Ivy Cottage until we build the house, we will need some place to store those items.  We added a recycled concrete path to our little garage, which goes around to the man door.  And we added some landscaping to make it appear like it’s been there forever.

If you have been watching over on our stories, you know we are in the middle of several other projects by that little garage.  We are cleaning up the woods of all dead brush and trees and installing an antique lamp post.  The most recent project that we JUST completed was installing a fence behind the little garage.

Our First Fence Project

Deb and I have installed so many fences in our day.  Actually, a picket and privacy fence all around one of our houses was our first MAJOR project we ever tried.  The reason we decided to tackle it ourselves was because the estimate for someone to install a fence was going to be $3,000.  And, we could install it ourselves for $700.   That was probably 20 years ago.  ????  Anyway, these were the days before YouTube.  So, Deb asked around for advice.   She asked several of our friends questions about our fence project and the Hardware Store Boys when we went to pick up our materials.

I will never forget.  The house was in town on a busier street.  And the second house from the corner.  So people turning the corner would be already driving pretty slow.  We were both standing in the front yard, each holding the side of the electric post hole digger.  We had guys actually stop in the middle of the street looking at us like we were insane.  ????  “Ladies, ladies…. what in the world are you doing?”

There were probably 20-25 holes to dig.  It took us a few weekends to do it, but it got done.  We had lots of different problems occur along the way, but all in all, it wasn’t that bad.  Since then, we have installed SEVERAL throughout the years at different properties, etc.

Fence Installation in the Woods

Back to the fence installation in the woods.  We placed the garage in an old path that leads into the woods.  It was where we initially thought we would have our driveway.  The layout of the land prevented us from using that driveway so we thought the garage would be perfect there.  BUT… you can see the back of the garage from the road.  Which is fine… but we want to use part of that as storage for the wheel barrel, our compost area, and a place to hang our tall ladders.  And, we didn’t want all of that to be seen from the road.

Therefore, we decided to install only 3 fence panels to hide those items.  Plus, it would give us more privacy while the trees and brush grow back up.  These 3 fence panels were such a PAIN to install that I said several curse words, almost threw the post hole digger once, and felt like giving up.  I think I almost cried a few times.  It took us SO LONG to finish.  We knew tree roots would be an issue and we’ve dealt with that problem before.  But this was the VERY DRY CLAY dirt and a dull post hole digger that didn’t help matters.

WE GOT IT DONE!  I just wanted to share this little fence installation project in the woods with you, because I’m SO HAPPY it is done.

If you want to watch the stories of our recycled concrete pathway, you can do that here.

And, I have all of the stories on the garage landscaping project here!
