If you follow us over on Instagram or Facebook, you already know we launched a collection with Antique Farmhouse. As you know, their collections don’t last long, so grab anything you want ASAP. That collection included some half columns that looked like true vintage pieces. The moment I saw them, I thought “headboard.” I asked Deb if we could create something that would do minimal damage to our walls, since we are renting, AND, something that would be easily dismembered and taken with us. We came up with this DIY Headboard Idea.
I’ve seen several antique half columns at garage sales and auctions over the years so this would work with those, too. The first thing we did was figure out how wide we wanted our headboard by leaning each piece up against the wall. And then we measured the space between each column to figure out how many 1″ x 4″ boards we needed. Since all of Deb’s tools are in storage, we had Lumberyard Boy cut each one to length. (That saved TONS of time.) Attach the half columns with a few long screws.
We attached three furring strips to the wall between the columns using three screws. The 1″x4″ boards will be attached directly to those furring strips to minimize the amount of damage done to the wall of the rental.
Start by attaching the top board of the headboard making sure it’s level. We attached them directly into the furring strips using screws because we have limited access to her tools. But, a nail gun would be SO SIMPLE and so fast.
Continue attaching the rest of the 1″x4″ boards all the way down to where the mattress will cover the wall. We added a board to the top to give it more details, but you wouldn’t have to. Deb wanted a piece of crown moulding for under that board, but we didn’t have any that wasn’t in storage.
We stained all of the boards dark walnut to match the half columns we got through Antique Farmhouse. We could have left them the color of wood but decided we wanted it to be white and distressed. So we used the same paint technique I shared with you before.
I LOVE the way it turned out and decided to display my Winter Deer picture. Obviously I can change this out with the seasons. I can already see Christmas lights wrapped around the top of it. I have so many more ideas for decor for this DIY headboard.
Thanks so much for hanging out with us here and following along with us Instagram and Facebook!

I love this.........simple yet has such impact. Did you paint it and may I ask what color/s you used. Also may I inquire the color of your walls? Have a lovely day
another stellar idea!
You are so freaking clever!!
So creative and looks pretty easy. I think it may be something I can do! I’m glad you did your painting technique on it. It makes your framed picture really stand out. ????
My sister now wants me to build her one. After seeing yours
hahaha Yay!
LOVE this! Our son recently moved out and I am now in the process of updating his vaulted bedroom into a guest room. I just purchased the columns and he agreed to construct the headboard for me. :) He is an electrician by day but his hobby is work working. This will be a perfect statement piece for him to "leave his mark" on his old room and yet will hopefully still feel like it's his room when he stays on occasion. Thank you for the lovely inspiration!
Could you share what stain you used to match the columns as we will keep the slats stained and not whitewash. Thanks again!!
Yay! Keep me posted. And, we used Dark Walnut and it matched those columns perfectly.
