Wooden Jack-o-Lantern DIY

We, and a bunch of friends, are doing a fun little story tour over on Instagram.  It’s ALL THINGS PUMPKINS.  As soon as we made the pumpkin theme, I knew what I wanted to do – a wooden jack-o-lantern!  I take photos of lots of things that I know Deb could make when I’m out and about.  And keep them on my phone until I either make them or get sick of seeing the picture.  ????   I have had this picture on my phone before… then erased it.  And saw it again, so I decided we must make them for our story tour.

Wooden Jack-o-Lantern DIY

I have seen many versions of this wooden pumpkin.  But I wanted mine a little different.   We happened to have some wood leftover from other projects.  And, we used some that we found on heavy trash the last time our town had pick up.  So this was a perfect project.

Deb cut four squares the size we wanted our pumpkin to be.  And then cut 2 squares, one for the top and one for the bottom.  Using her jig saw, she cut out the face, but you could paint on a face if you didn’t want to cut one out.

I ended up staining this one and then gave it two coats of white paint.  I asked that she leave the top unattached so I could set a candle inside to make a jack-o-lantern.  So I added my favorite battery operated candle with a timer.  Deb attached a small tree branch to make the stem.

Another idea for this Pumpkin – Jack-o-Lantern

I thought it would be cute to not even have a top on one and use it as a planter.  How cute would these be on the porch with mums.  Or inside with one of your flower pots tucked down inside.

What do you think of my little jack-o-lantern?  I think he turned out pretty cute for free.

Also.. I need to tell you about these gorgeous taper candles.  I found one in my stash a few weeks ago that I have had for YEARS.  I think they are so pretty and I remember being in my 30s and just loving them.  Memories came flooding back.  I text a friend and said, “Remember those candles we used to be obsessed with back in the day?”  She remembered the company name and I found them on Amazon.  They are a little pricey.  But they are gorgeous and burn so clean.  I thought I would share!
