I already shared that we had a pond dug on our property outside of the woods.  If you have been watching social media, you have seen it several times.  We recently had a few evergreen trees planted around the pond.  We wanted them mainly for privacy and as a wind break in the winter.   I started getting lots more of the same questions over on Instagram about the trees.  So I figured the best place to keep all of this information would be on a new post.  We had 7 planted on the side and 3 planted in the front.  We think we will probably add a few more next year to the side, but we will see.

This post will service double duty.  It will show you the evergreens and how much beauty they added to the pond area.  And, it will answer maybe any of the same questions you may have.  We are not experts at ponds, whatsoever, but we do know what we have figured out since we had it dug.

Evergreens around the Pond and FAQs

Some of you who have watched our Instagram stories for years may remember we had Fort Wayne Trees plant several trees in the backyard the old house.  We wanted mature trees which we wouldn’t be able to plant ourselves.  When we decided to plant evergreens around the pond, we knew who we would call.  They did such a great job at the old house that it was a no-brainer.

We went to Fort Wayne Trees to pick out the variety we wanted for the front out by the road and several to line the space between the field and the pond to use as a wind break and privacy both.  

FAQs on the Evergreen Trees

Q:  What kind of evergreens did you plant in the front and on the side?

A:  We opted for Serbian Spruce in the front, because they look like Christmas trees to me.  I can just see white lights on them.  We bought Green Giant Arborvitae for the wind block and privacy on the side.

Q:  Will the evergreens block the sunset?

A:  No… thank goodness.  There is plenty of room on each side to see the sunsets and also above them.  The world is big.  

Q:  How tall will the trees get?

A:  They will all get approximately 30-40′ at full maturity.

Q:  How will you keep them watered?

A:  Our well is outside of the woods and we had a water spigot installed out there for this reason.  We knew our veggie garden would be out there also due to the sunlight.  So we will just pull the hose around.

Q:  How often do you have to water them?

A:  Evergreen Boy said that we only have to water them twice a week for a few minutes, unless it rains.  Come mid-November, we won’t have to water them at all until spring, again unless it’s really rainy…. which normally is the case.

Q:  Will you be able to ice skate on the pond this winter?

A:  Absolutely.  FACT:  I have never been ice skating.  Deb has.  So who knows… we may try it.  I get a little freaked out about falling through the ice, but I won’t go out unless I know the ice is very thick.

Q:  How do you deal with all of the mosquitoes in the woods.. especially with a pond?

A:  We have our woods sprayed for mosquitoes by Orkin once every month during the summer.  It is fine for wildlife and us.  If we didn’t, we couldn’t enjoy our outdoors.

Q:  Are you still going to get a pump and a fountain for the pond?

A:  Yes!  We went to get one ordered.  But, they said that it would take a few weeks to get in and then a few weeks to install.  By that time, we would only get to enjoy it a few weeks before they would have to come and take it out for the winter.  We opted to wait until spring for that.  Stay tuned!  We have a really pretty one picked out.

Q:  How will you keep leaves out of the pond?

A:  We won’t.  They will just sink to the bottom.

Q:  How big is the pond and how deep? 

A:  Our pond is quite small.  It is only 40’x120′ and 10′ deep. (roughly)
