French Toleware Chandeliers

Do you remember when we switched out our lights in the kitchen? We originally hung new lights that looked old, but decided that we wanted antique chandeliers like the rest of our home. We removed two smaller chandeliers from our bedroom to hang in the kitchen which left nothing in the bedroom. This was way back in April of this year. We have gone this long without lighting in our bedroom and had our eyes peeled for matching antique lights. I wanted matching french toleware chandeliers for the bedroom but never thought I would find them. Well.. that all changed when we went to the Springfield Ohio Extravaganza Flea Market.

French Toleware Chandeliers

If you aren’t familiar with french toleware, here is some information found on google.

French toleware are decorative metalwork that was often painted with intricate designs. Originally, it was used for practical items like trays and containers, but by the 19th century, artisans began creating elaborate chandeliers. These chandeliers typically featured floral motifs, scrolling vines, and vibrant colors, often inspired by the natural world. Toleware chandeliers were lighter and more affordable than their crystal counterparts, making them accessible for a broader audience. By the mid-19th century, the use of toleware spread beyond France, influencing designs in other countries.

To me, they are a little bulkier and make a bigger statement. Our bedroom is fairly large, so I wanted something more substantial in here. To be honest, I NEVER in a million years thought I would find two matching french toleware chandeliers. I kept my eyes peeled on the marketplace and decided that I would be happy with two that are similar.

We shop the Springfield Ohio Extravaganza Flea Market every May and September. I spotted the perfect chandelier and said out loud… “Dang it.. this is exactly what I want but would love two.” The owner pointed to the second one in her booth which was an exact replica. I honestly couldn’t believe it.

We, of course, brought them home.

Deb ended up rewiring them simply because the chain and wiring was too short for our bedroom ceilings. I cleaned them really well by removing all of the crystals and soaking them in a little bit of dish soap and white vinegar. And, washed the entire chandelier, as well. Some of the crystals were missing, so I did what I normally do when that happens. I start adding the crystals back to the places that give the most interest.

There were enough crystals between what was originally on them and a stash of crystals that I have to balance both out. I believe I counted that each of these chandeliers are still missing 45 crystals…. Ha! I cannot imagine having that many more because I think they look really pretty with this many.

We are actually going to give our bedroom a makeover this winter by adding some texture to the walls. I’m not sure yet what we are doing but I may wallpaper. So stay tuned for that.
